The Department of History at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, in New Brunswick invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in African history to begin on 09/01/2025. A PhD in History or related field is required; candidates must have received their degree by the start of the appointment.

We welcome applications from scholars specializing in any region, time period, or thematic focus within the field of African history. We are particularly interested in applicants whose work complements one or more of the department's strengths, including Atlantic and Indian Ocean circuits of exchange; the global study of race, slavery, and abolition; and colonization and decolonization. We also encourage applications from scholars whose research and teaching interests intersect with the university's interdisciplinary initiatives in public history, health and medicine, law, the environment, and the study of women, gender, and sexuality. The successful applicant will teach History courses at a wide range of levels in the department's undergraduate program, Master's program in Global and Comparative History, and doctoral program.
