RSM's Washington National Tax team is an experience-based group of distinguished tax professionals who track tax developments directly from the sources and immediately translate the information into how these changes impact our clients. With resources across the country and a physical presence in Washington, D.C., our team stays up to date on the latest developments in tax policy and tax developments. Team members share their analysis of potential implications of new tax laws, Treasury regulations and IRS pronouncements through a regular cadence of articles, webcasts and newsletters and working closely with our engagement teams and clients.

RSM's WNT Exempt Organizations and Philanthropy practice advises exempt organizations and their contributors, managers, and advisors on a variety of tax issues including requirements for obtaining and maintaining exempt status, unrelated business income and Chapter 42 excise taxes, reporting requirements for foreign activities and investments, and other legislative and regulatory matters. In addition, this team advises individuals, partnerships and corporations with respect to charitable contributions, substantiation requirements for non-cash contributions, and complex philanthropic planning strategies.

We currently are seeking a candidate with strong philanthropic tax advisory experience to join our WNT Exempt Organizations and Philanthropy practice in a senior manager level position. This position will provide tax technical support to philanthropically motivated clients, including ultra-high net worth individuals, family offices, and business owners, by assisting with charitable gift planning and compliance.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop strategies that help achieve favorable charitable deduction limits and non-cash contribution values for donors
  • Advise on valuation and donor acknowledgement requirements to substantiate charitable deductions
  • Assist clients with development of a comprehensive philanthropic strategy, including evaluating and selecting charitable vehicle(s), assessing the optimal structure, timing, and type of gifts
  • Assist with formation and restructuring of exempt organizations, including terminations, mergers, split-ups, transfers, and conversions
  • Represent tax-exempt organizations and their contributors before the IRS with respect to private letter ruling requests, determination letters and IRS examinations
  • Identify and communicate changes to the tax law affecting exempt organizations and their donors
  • Draft thought leadership alerts, articles and other content
  • Provide internal knowledge sharing, including the development and delivery of training
  • Maintain competency as a technical resource and subject matter expert through continuing education
  • Identify and manage areas of risk to clients and to the firm
  • Participate in and contribute to marketing and business activities

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience with a national public accounting firm, law firm, IRS National Office, or family office
  • Strong consulting experience with complex philanthropic strategies used by family offices and ultra-high net worth taxpayers
  • Deep understanding of exempt organizations and non-charitable vehicles used to accomplish philanthropic objectives (particularly private foundations, donor advised funds (DAFs), supporting organizations, social welfare organizations, and charitable trusts)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to articulate complex information
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university
  • JD and admitted to at least one state bar or CPA

At RSM, an employee's pay at any point in their career is intended to reflect their experiences, performance, and skills for their current role. The salary range (or starting rate for interns and associates) for this role represents numerous factors considered in the hiring decisions including, but not limited to, education, skills, work experience, certifications, location, etc. As such, pay for the successful candidate(s) could fall anywhere within the stated range.

Compensation Range: $122,300 - $245,900

Individualsselected for this role will be eligible for a discretionary bonus based on firm and individual performance.
