Entry-level postdoc position available for NIH-funded laboratory in the Department of Genetics at Rutgers. The laboratory research uses the genetically tractable C. elegans systems to study processes relevant to human health and disease using using genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and microscopy/imaging. A qualified candidate will be capable of working independently to perform lab work in this area, but also manages, trains, and schedules hourly student workers and undergraduate research assistants in various protocols and laboratory operations and procedures. Communicates with the PI in reviewing project performance, status and deadlines on an ongoing basis. Performs independent data review and reporting for all routine, existing and future, research. Responsible for maintaining an accurate and detailed lab notebook, conducting genetic, cell and molecular biology experiments and over-seeing undergraduate research projects. Standard laboratory include C. elegans genetic analysis, biochemical experiments, CRISPR and recombinant DNA techniques, phenotypic analysis, epifluorescence microscopy, confocal and electron microscopy, high throughput genomics, high throughput proteomics (e.g., mass spectrometry).. This position will require presentations of data, making figures and drafting manuscripts.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
PHD degree in life sciences required. Requires minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in a research laboratory, excellent communication skills, excellent computer literacy.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
PhD in life sciences. Experience with proteomics, bioinformatics, mass spectrometry, protein-protein interactions, recombinant expression/purification.
Equipment Utilized
Must be familiar with Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and R. Must be familiar with gel electrophoresis, RNA isolation systems, PCR machines, autoclaves, Apple computers, Windows PC's, electrophoresis equipment, and protein purification systems
Physical Demands and Work Environment
Able to stand, lift, bend. Able to occasionally lift and/or carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Able to reach and grasp with arms and hands. Work involves possible exposure to malodorous vapors and toxic chemicals. Long periods of standing and/or sitting.
Overview
Conduct grant-funded research as directed by the PI (Dr. Barr). Duties include designing and executing experiments independently for own projects, data analysis and generation of experiments. They will oversee the design and implementation of experiments from a technician and undergraduate researchers. Key outcomes include producing publication-quality data for figures and for assisting the PI in obtaining grant funding. It is expected that the research findings will be published, with the individual contributing to the writing and production of the resulting manuscript. It is expected that the research findings will be provided as preliminary data for grant proposals, with the individual contributing to the writing and production of such proposals. Laboratory notebook and data organization: Duties include keeping an up to date electronic lab notebook and electronic data organization to NIH and lab standards. They will oversee the notebooks and data obtaining by undergraduate trainees to teach them best practices and ensure that the data is recorded appropriately. Key outcome is the ability of the PI to seemlessly track experimental data, results and interpretations for presentations, grants and manuscripts. Obtaining and analyzing data independently, make figures independently and provide first drafts independently. Work with PI on edits and final submission. Key outcomes will be publication quality work submitted and accepted to top tier peer-reviewed journals.
