The Department of Marine & Coastal Sciences, in collaboration with PIs in various other departments are seeking two Postdoctoral Associates.
The Postdoctoral Associates will conduct specialized research on a collaborative project on the origin, evolution and construction of proteins that transfer electrons (i.e. oxidoreductases). It is expected that they have expertise in several of the following areas including bioinorganic chemistry, structural biology, microbial genomics, biogeochemistry, bioinformatics, molecular evolution, and synthetic organic chemistry that will allow the design of interdisciplinary experiments to test origins of life questions. The Postdoctoral Associates will be expected to participate in the configuration and maintenance of instrumentation necessary for conduct of the project. It is expected that research will lead to publications. They will be expected to prepare manuscripts as well as contribute to the preparation of grant and fellowship applications. The best suited candidates will be also be expected to be highly collaborative and train and mentor undergraduates in scientific research projects. |

Candidates who meet requirements with "All But Degree" (ABD) will be considered, but are required to have a PhD on or before the actual date of hire (no exceptions). |

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
Candidates must have completed a doctoral (Ph.D) level program in Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field. Ph.D. The candidates are expected to be proficient in spoken and written English. Prior experience with EPR and NMR spectroscopies strongly preferred. Previous mentoring experience is desirable. Candidates must have demonstrated expertise in at least two of the following areas: bioinorganic chemistry, structural biology, microbial genomics, biogeochemistry, bioinformatics, molecular evolution, and synthetic organic chemistry. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.) Computer simulations of protein structure and computational protein design of small peptides and proteins.
2.) Synthesizes and characterized peptide and protein designs.
3.) Structural and functional characterization of designs.
4.) Trains and mentors undergraduates in scientific research projects.
5.) Participates in scientific meetings within the NASA Astrobiology Institute and national and international scientific meetings.
6.) Coordinates multi-investigator and multi-institution collaborative interactions with regard to the project.
7.) Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Rutgers' regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified.
8.) Understands and adheres to Rutgers' compliance standards, SEBS's Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
9.) Performs other related duties as assigned. |

Computer data input required. Ability to use computing resources and perform bench-laboratory experiments. Laboratory environment. Universal precautions are mandatory. |
Overview |
This is a one-year appointment, with the possibility of renewal for a second or third year depending on satisfactory performance and available funding.
