The Department of Urban Education at Rutgers University-Newark is a dynamic community of scholar-practitioners and local experts who are committed to linguistic equity, racial justice, and disability liberation. The Department invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Elementary and Literacy Education to begin September 1, 2025. The successful candidate will have experience in urban education settings and demonstrate a commitment to community-centered research. This tenure-track position involves teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, conducting research, and building strong partnerships with local school districts. Rutgers University-Newark is a designated Minority Serving Institute ( MSI) and a racially and linguistically diverse community, therefore we seek a candidate committed to equity and social justice for all. Minimum Education and Experience
The successful candidate must have earned a doctoral degree specializing in elementary education, literacy education, or a closely related field; have demonstrated expertise in urban education settings; and a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in an elementary school
Certifications/Licenses
Must hold a teaching certification.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Elementary pedagogical knowledge. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of developing and sustaining meaningful relationships with local school districts and community organizations; experience working in and with urban schools and/or urban community-based organizations that serve linguistically, culturally, racially, ethnically, and economically diverse communities; a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in urban education; bring an asset-based approach to partnerships with urban schools and communities; have strong interpersonal and communication skills; and their scholarly record should show strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in education.
