The Department of Urban Education at Rutgers University-Newark is a dynamic community of scholar-practitioners and local experts who are committed to linguistic equity, racial justice, and disability liberation. The Department invites applications for the tenure-track position of Assistant Professor of Elementary and Literacy Education to begin September 1, 2025. The successful candidate will have experience in urban education settings and demonstrate a commitment to community-centered research. This tenure-track position involves teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, conducting research, and building strong partnerships with local school districts. Rutgers University-Newark is a designated Minority Serving Institute (
MSI) and a racially and linguistically diverse community, therefore we seek a candidate committed to equity and social justice for all. Review of applicants will begin September 9th and continue until the position is filled.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
The successful candidate must have earned a doctoral degree specializing in elementary education, literacy education, or a closely related field; have demonstrated expertise in urban education settings; and a minimum of 5 years of teaching experience in an elementary school |
Certifications/Licenses |
Must hold a teaching certification. |
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities |
Elementary pedagogical knowledge. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record of developing and sustaining meaningful relationships with local school districts and community organizations; experience working in and with urban schools and/or urban community-based organizations that serve linguistically, culturally, racially, ethnically, and economically diverse communities; a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities in urban education; bring an asset-based approach to partnerships with urban schools and communities; have strong interpersonal and communication skills; and their scholarly record should show strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in education. |

Immunization Requirements
Under Policy 100.3.1 Immunization Policy for Covered Individuals, if employment will commence during Flu Season, Rutgers University may require certain prospective employees to provide proof that they are vaccinated against Seasonal Influenza for the current Flu Season, unless the University has granted the individual a medical or religious exemption. Additional infection control and safety policies may apply. Prospective employees should speak with their hiring manager to determine which policies apply to the role or position for which they are applying.
