MedStar Health is looking for a Senior Medical Assistant to join our team! We are looking for a certified Medical Assistant with excellent patient interaction skills and basic computer skills, including proficiency in the use of Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems.

The Senior Medical Assistant performs clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Duties may include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, measurement and documentation of vital signs, and assisting providers with patient exams. Coaches others for safety and engages in the training, orientation, and competency assessment of Medical Assistant staff. Position may float to other sites/locations within the system.

Primary Duties:

  • Acts as mentor for the medical assistant staff. Actively participates in Medical Assistant and Clinical Associate candidate interviews, selection, and retention activities; assists with training and onboarding of these roles. Assists in training on efficient use of the EMR to include accurate documentation of clinically related activities and best practice workflows. Communicates opportunities for improving efficiency and seeks resolution to identified barriers.

  • Assists with patient preparation for examination, minor office procedures and health education of patients. Manages patient volume. Provides clerical support. Co-leads team huddles to review and prepare for scheduled patient visits. Screens patients for preventative care needs, ongoing support, barriers to care, safety concerns and potential fall risk. Conducts surveillance for transitions of care, emergent/urgent care, or follow up tasks. Conducts motivational interviews and identifies potential behavioral health needs. Participates and leads in utilizing optimal workflows to improve quality metrics and value-based care.

  • Reports actual/ potential problems concerning patients, families, and associates. Promotes customer service, enhancing the patient care experience. Ensures ongoing compliance by maintaining and auditing temperature logs, ensuring medication supplies are current/unexpired, checking and maintaining emergency equipment, etc. Participates in population management activities including an awareness of populations served and engages patients in self-management support, care/health goal setting, pre-visit planning, and the capturing of information that leads to health care improvement activities.

  • Performs patient and laboratory testing, including Point of Care Testing, collecting specimens for send-out lab testing, tuberculosis skin testing, electrocardiography, pulmonary function tests, vision, and hearing testing. Removes sutures/staples. Documents clinically related activities in the EMR; performs required patient follow-up such as pap smears, Pb levels, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), mammograms, and STD's. Collects and processes specimens, completes requisitions, and documents.

  • Provides escort/ chaperoning and assists with patient discharge. Fulfills infection prevention and environmental responsibilities. Updates records of equipment maintenance and manages inventories. Provides telephone screening services to gather information. May insert intravenous catheter for physician initiated IV fluid therapy or administration of intravenous medication. May insert, remove, and monitor urinary catheter for procedures; prepare and administer oral drugs and injections limited to intradermal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular. May perform phlebotomy. Provides Health coaching and follow up. Utilizes the EMR to propose patient medication refills for physician approval. Completes requisitions for tests. Contacts insurance companies for pre-authorizations for patient medications and specialty referrals.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • 2 years of health care experience with 1 year of experience as a Medical Assistant at MedStar Health.

  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)- American Association of Medical Assistants OR Registered Medical Assistant (RMA)- American Medical Technologists.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS).

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.

This position has a hiring range of $19.17 -
$31.36
