Pulmonary Sleep Medicine Advanced Practice Provider - MedStar Montgomery Medical Center
Our advanced practice providers work collaboratively with physicians to provide integrated, high-quality care at all locations. As one of the largest medical groups in the country, MedStar Health APPs work with medical, surgical, and specialty providers to provide patient-centered care. We currently have a need for a Pulmonary Sleep Medicine APP.

The APP will be working with a team of 2 Physicians in this role. The role will involve a combination of both inpatientand outpatient care. A formal shadowing/training period of 3 to 6 months will be provided to providers without prior pulmonary experience

APP will be working with the attending on the pulmonary service at our community hospital.This involves:

  • Evaluating patients on the pulmonary consult service. This involves doing initial history/physical consultations and follow-up progress notes.

  • Establishing appropriate medical diagnoses, ordering tests, and recommending treatment.

  • Collaborating with all involved care teams, including other consultants.

  • Co-ordination of inpatient to outpatient pulmonary care.

  • Assisting the attending with procedures such as chest ultrasound, thoracentesis, chest tube placement, pleuro-evac management, administration of intrapleural thrombolytics, bronchoscopy/EBUS, pleurX catheter management and teaching.

The outpatient clinic is located in the main building of the hospital which operates Tuesday to Friday. APP will work mostly with the attending on duty as well as seeing some patients independently.

  • APP will be seeing new and follow-up patients. This involves doing initial history/physical consultations and follow-up office notes.

  • APP will most commonly be managing patients with COPD, bronchiectasis, asthma, smoking cessation, lung nodules, lung cancer, lung cancer screening, ILD, pulmonary infections and pleural effusions.

  • There will be focus of independently seeing patient for smoking cessation and lung cancer screening.

  • APP will order outpatient testing which includes PFT, 6MWT, MCT and radiology. Outpatient procedures such as thoracentesis and lung biopsy are done with diagnostic radiology.

  • Daily clinic responsibilities include answering messages from patients/other providers, coordination of care/appointments with clinic staff, medication refills, prior-authorizations, oxygen re-certifications, updating lung cancer screening database etc.

  • May assist with outpatient bronchoscopy procedures which are done in the OR.
  • May administer new advanced medications for asthma in the office.

Schedule:

  • Tuesday-Friday 36 hours per week*

  • No weekends, evenings, or major holidays

  • Day shift only

Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited physician assistant or acute care nurse practitioner program.
  • NCCPA (physician assistant) or Acute Care NP (nurse practitioner) certification.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications.
  • One year of critical care experience or in-patient hospital medicine is preferred. The ideal candidate will have experience in advanced procedures.
