Description

The incumbent in this position provides nursing duties in the SIU School of Medicine Ambulatory Clinic, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Cardiology. The primary responsibility being to assist physicians, residents, and medical students in the performance of patient care activities. The incumbent's principle clinical assignment will be in the Division of Cardiology. This nurse may also assist in other specialties as needed.

Examples of Duties

Direct Patient Care 50%
1. Provides primary support for remote monitor of all SIU devices via Pacemate by reporting in chart and to the EP faculty for billing and trouble-shooting if needed.
2. Counsels and coordinates care of cardiac device patients including pacemakers, implantable cardiac defibrillators and loop recorders.
3. Advocate patients on community resources including hanging flyers in our office for many public related health problems.
4. Facilitate communication between patient/family and providers when needed.
5. Help coordinate care of hospital follow-up patients; including wound checks, interrogating devices and sending orders/medications post-op.
6. Acts under the physician and nurse practitioner's direction in providing nursing care to electrophysiology patients.
7. Follows standards of nursing practice in accordance with SIU's policies and procedures.
8. Performs nursing assessments on patients in the clinic & on the phone: general, treatment specific, or problem-specific, depending on the need & appropriateness.
9. Obtains vital signs and basic care data, prepares patients for examination, interviews patient and records medical histories and current acute problems.
10. Performs patient teaching in regard to disease management, medications, device management, symptom management and proper follow-up.
11. Triages phone calls for the physician.
12. Administers medications by all routes.
13. Performs EKGs, enters appropriate charges, and maintains necessary supplies.
14. Performs venipuncture, if needed, for purposes of phlebotomy or IV infusions.
15. Under direction of physician, orders medication refills & documents such in the electronic health record.
16. Performs PICC line removal and PICC line dressing changes per departmental protocol.
17. Works with other health care team members in the multi-disciplinary clinic including other physicians as requested. Maintains rapport with other school departments and ancillary services.
18. Interrogate all in-clinic cardiac devices
Indirect Patient Care 50%
1. Maintains clean, well-equipped treatment and procedure rooms. Ordering supplies as needed.
2. Obtains pre-procedure patient preparation orders, notes or other items requested by physician for any upcoming procedures.
3. Obtains post procedure patient needs to include discharge orders, follow up appointments or any other items requested by physician.
4. Provide lead nurse responsibilities under the direction of the Charge Nurse. Will assist with making daily schedule and managing call ins.
5. Triaging patient, provider and staff requests, concerns or ideas for Charge Nurse.
6. Assists with orientation of new employees.
7. Advocate for family and clients' needs such as prior authorization for medications, imagining services, and home health.
8. Schedules consultations and procedures and obtains referrals/pre-certifications when required/needed.
9. Provide education to patients regarding procedures
10. Provides follow-up and coordination of patient care by telephone with the patient, family, and other health care providers including insurance companies, case managers, home care agencies, pharmacies, extended care facilities, hospice units and hospitals when directed or needed.
11. Documents teaching, phone calls and nursing assessments, interventions & evaluations in the electronic health record.
12. Offers suggestions to help plan, implement, and evaluate procedures designed to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness within the assigned clinic/office.
13. Billing for remote device monitoring and in-person device interrogations


Qualifications

1) Licensed as a registered professional nurse in the State of Illinois (If an Illinois Resident is licensed as a professional nurse in a state other than Illinois, the applicant must meet the criteria established by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to obtain the proper licensure within five (5) months of the date of appointment.); AND

2) Bachelor?s degree; AND

3) 2 years of public health or specialized nursing experience


Condition of Employment: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, an out-of-state resident who is hired into this position must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of their start date.
