Description

This position will provide specialized care for patients with neurologic disease in the SIU Neuroscience Institute, Decatur division, and will be responsible for teaching the discipline to medical students and residents. This position will have responsibilities in administration, teaching, research and medical service as they pertain to the general mission of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and the specific needs of the Department of Neurology. Responsibilities shall include direct patient care, teaching and work rounds, lectures, protocol development and staff education.


Examples of Duties

5% Teaching
1. Presentation of lectures, seminars, conferences and rounds for residents and students
(Years II, Ill and IV).
2. Participate in Neurology grand rounds (attend weekly, present periodically).
3. Conduct clinical {bedside and otherwise) teaching of neurology, family medicine and other house staff, and medical students in the outpatient clinic and during rounds on inpatient service at SIU affiliated hospital in Decatur.
85% Service (Patient Care)
1. Develop and maintain a professional practice in accordance with departmental policy and the University practice plan (SIU Healthcare).
2. Conduct 8 half-days of outpatient clinics per week, which can include EEG and EMG in the office and at the hospital.
5% Administration
1. Serve on university, departmental and hospital committees as needed.
2. Participate in scheduled meetings as a member of the hospital staff at Decatur Memorial Hospital.
5% Research
1. Participate in clinical trials of new therapies for neurologic disease.
2. Publish research in peer reviewed journals and in other suitable scientific media.
3. Present research in local, regional and national meetings.


Qualifications

  • Licenced as a physician and neurologist in the State of Illinois, or eligible for licensure; AND
  • Board certified or board eligible in Neurology; AND
  • Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations.
