Associate Division Chief, Emergency Medicine Academic Affairs and Research

Description The Associate Division Chief for Academic Affairs and Research will work closely with the Division Chief of Emergency Medicine to successfully develop and implement a vision consistent with the mission of CNHS, and a strategic plan for the academic and research pillar of the Division of Emergency Medicine within the larger strategic plan of the Division. The Associate Division Chief works with the Chief to set standards of excellence for faculty within the division, oversee research protocols, develop faculty members interested in research and support the academic promotion process for the Division. The Associate Chief maintains professional standards of the division and represents the Chief and the Division with academic affairs and research workgroups and activities when the Chief is not able to attend.
Qualifications Minimum Education
Medical Doctor (M.D.) Medical degree from an accredited medical school. (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
3 years Previous experience managing a division, department, or program in an academic setting. (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Demonstrates a personal commitment to Continuing Medical Education and remains current on the developments and progress in his/her subspecialty.
Has expertise with research methods and an active participant in setting national agenda in a specific research discipline as evidence by membership in national committees, society boards or alike
Proven leadership abilities with experience supervising direct reports with excellent interpersonal as well as written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated experience in management of research strategy and operations.
Ability to maintain quality and safety standards.
A strong commitment to innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and education.
Collaborates with the Chief of Emergency Medicine in the preparation of annual academic affairs and research portfolios and reviews as required
Takes a leadership role in promoting the activity of the Division to enhance its reputation within the community and, as appropriate, nationally/internationally, and works, in concert with the institution, in marketing of Division activities.

Required Licenses and Certifications
Board Certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, fully licensed and credentialed attending staff category physician on the medical staff of Children's National Medical Center. (Required)

  • Provide clinical services for patients at Children's National Hospital and other approved sites in an ethical, professional and timely manner.
  • Provide oversight of the medical care team and manage direct patient care; improve continuity of care, customer service and partnerships with community medical providers through timely completion of records and communication.
  • Actively participate in family centered care and communicate in a professional and compassionate manner. Serve as a leader in communication with referring providers and work to develop these relationships.
  • Appropriately utilize the defined chain of command and escalation policies.
  • Respond to team members and outside medical providers in a timely and respectful manner; communicate clearly to faculty expectations regarding patient clinical care updates and notifications of significant clinical changes, and encourages questions.

  • Conduct research of significant scientific value in the clinical and translational science area(s) relevant to his/her practice specialty.

  • Submit applications for grants or contracts for funding of research projects.
  • Leads and participates in Division and hospital research committees, workshop special interest groups, etc.

  • Participate in CNMC medical education programs through learning activities with colleagues and trainees.
  • Participate as appropriate in hospital/university -wide educational programs and outreach forums to educate primary care and other referrals sources.
  • Participate as appropriate in local, regional and national educational efforts.

  • Follow established bylaws, policies and procedures, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards.
  • Adequately and promptly complete all clinical documentation as required by TJC, other regulatory bodies and/or the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations and Policies and Procedures include complete clinical charge documentation.
  • Identify problems related to research protocols or staff professionalism and make recommendations for improvement.
  • Cooperate and participate in the development, implementation and revision of policies affecting emergency medicine professional practice, judgment and quality of care;
  • Participate as a member of CNH research teams such as those within the Children's National Research Institute or the Institutional Review Board and hospital committees such as Appointments, Promotion & Tenure that are pertinent to hospital wide research and academic affairs priorities.
  • Participate in evaluation of peers and support staff; acknowledge and report medical and/or other errors as well as participate in efforts to prevent them.
  • Ensure that performance evaluations, medical requirements and all other organizational circuit breakers for all staff are completed on time.
Strategy Development
  • Develop, in concert with the Division leadership, a vision consistent with the mission of CNMC and a strategic plan to implement quality research protocols and academic excellence across the Division
  • Anticipate future strategic, operational and financial trends and consequences in the marketplace, technology and healthcare innovations.
  • Develop planning scenarios and formulate strategies.
  • Identify and assess all variables that may impact patient outcomes.
Division Leadership
  • Set the academic affairs and research directions for the Division and its members, in concert with the Chief.
  • Take a leadership role in promoting the activity of the Division to enhance CNMC's clinical and academic reputation within the community and, as appropriate, nationally/internationally, and work, in concert with the institution, in marketing of Division activities.
  • Establish standards and monitors for the research and academic performance of the division
  • Develop policies and procedures that are necessary to support the research mission of the Division and the promotion process for faculty in conjunction with the Chief
  • Ensure adherence within the Division of the hospital and medical staff bylaws and policies and procedures.
Financial Management
  • Participate in financial planning and budget preparation for the resource needs of the division with primary oversight responsibility for the Emergency Department research program budget
  • In conjunction with the Chief, work to best align resource to meet patient demand, participating in philanthropic opportunities, if necessary, for future capital planning and purchases.
  • Track, monitor, and evaluate best resource allocation for patient care, faculty development and research demands.
