Minimal Qualifications:
Master's degree in social work or counseling or master's degree in a related field with at least 18 graduate hours in social work or counseling.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Major Functions:

  • Triage and referral of students to social services, community and government support agencies and other internal and external resources
  • Provide personal and educational counseling services to individual students from diverse backgrounds
  • Crisis intervention for students
  • Provide support to at-risk students
  • Involvement in district Behavioral Intervention Team/Cares Team
  • Provide consultation to faculty, staff, and administration
  • Document student meetings in MCC system
  • Participate in campus and district committees to support MCC's mission
  • Develop and provide outreach, workshops, presentations, and referral resources to internal and external audiences
  • Serve as a liaison between the College and community resources


Required Experience and Skills:

  • Knowledge of internal and external referral services
  • Experience counseling individuals and/or groups related to personal and educational issues Experience working with adult students and other diverse populations
  • Knowledge of student development and best practices
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with all constituencies of a diverse community
  • Demonstrated interest in and passion for working with community college students
  • Ability to work well with others



Work Hours
Position Summary:
Counselors are full time Faculty who provide personal and educational counseling services to MCC's diverse student population to aid in student retention. They provide referral, outreach, and connections with campus and community resources to support students. Counselors provide consultation to the campus community (faculty, staff, and administration) and student crisis intervention when needed. Counselors provide presentations and workshops to the campus and local community to aid in student retention and outreach.

Candidates who are currently completing the specified degree or requirements must submit documentation that all requirements, including conferral of degree. * Applicants selected for an interview will be required to prepare a ten (10) minute teaching demonstration on an assigned topic. * Interviews will be conducted by a search committee. * Position will remain open until filled.


Preferred Areas of Expertise:
Preference will be given to individuals who possess:

  • Licensed by the state of Missouri as a clinical social worker (LCSW) or professional counselor (LPC)
  • Experience working with community agencies to support at-risk students
  • Experience in a community college setting or higher education environment
  • Experience assisting and identifying crisis counseling students/situations
  • Experience identifying community resources and maintaining relationships with community partners to facilitate referrals for additional support services
