Areas of mechanical design expertise include large structures, mechanisms, opto-mechanical systems, and electronics packaging. Engineers from the group are critical to all aspects of program execution beginning with conceptual design, continuing through detail design, system integration and test, and concluding with environmental and performance testing. The group is the Engineering Division's center for 3D computer-aided design. Example projects include airborne and space-based laser communications systems, space based sensors, and vehicle mounted radars and large radar antenna systems. Position Description The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team on the development of complex mechanical and opto-mechanical systems. Responsibilities include engineering design, analyses, integration, and testing of complex hardware from conceptual design through fabrication and field performance evaluation. The candidate must be knowledgeable in a broad range of challenging problems involving structures, mechanisms and opto-mechanical systems. The successful candidate will be expected to present engineering designs to both internal and external audiences. This position involves working in close-knit teams and may involve travel to meetings and field sites.
