The Conservatory is comprised of four divisions: Music Studies, Music Performance, Dance, and Theatre. Adjunct faculty teaching in the Conservatory are responsible for teaching regular courses or applied lessons as assigned by the Division Chairperson.

Job Description

UMKC Conservatory is continuously seeking qualified candidates for adjunct faculty teaching positions.

THE INTENT OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS TO IDENTIFY A POOL OF ADJUNCT FACULTY WHO ARE QUALIFIED TO DELIVER UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE LEVEL COURSES AND INSTRUCTION IN ALL DEPARTMENTS OF THE CONSERVATORY.

Job Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Contribute to the academic and service environments that are characteristic to a conservatory within a university; and enrich the cultural environment of the Kansas City metropolitan community.
  • Communicates clearly in a timely manner issues and/or concerns regarding student performance to department chair
  • Respond to email, phone calls, questions and other inquiries in a timely manner
  • Promote and sustain positive relationships with the students, Dean, department chairs, and university faculty and staff.
  • Demonstrate knowledge, skills and dispositions that clearly align with the Conservatory of Music and Dance's mission, vision, and values
  • Teach students in groups or individual applied lessons. Courses offered range in topics from Music Composition, Music Education and Theory, Music Therapy, Instrumental Studies (percussion, string bass, flute, saxophone, trumpet, etc.), Vocal Studies, Keyboard Studies, Jazz Studies, and Dance.
  • Demonstrate and reflect knowledge of effective instructional practices for classrooms with differing backgrounds or individual setting
Qualifications

Degree or appropriate, significant experience / training relevant to the level of class and content area being taught

Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the Conservatory's mission and values

Familiarity with teaching applied lessons or classroom lectures

Demonstrated highly successful experience teaching in their area of specialization. This may include higher degrees or other experience equivalent to that. May also entail specific certifications.

An official copy of transcripts(s), showing degree(s) with courses completed, and conferring institution will be required before an official offer is made to the candidate.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salaries are negotiable based on education, experience and internal equity..

A complete application includes a letter of application detailing desire and qualifications to teach in one or more of the areas listed above, curriculum vita, a minimum of two current letters of recommendation (must be on letterhead and signed), transcript reflecting the highest degree earned and previous coursework leading up to the highest degree earned.

These are temporary, non-tenure-accruing, non-benefits eligible positions. Appointment periods are for the semester with consideration for reappointment.
