Surgical Innovation Lab, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine

Job Description

The Surgical Innovation Lab seeks two candidates for a Research Assistant position at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine (SOM). We are looking for energetic, task-oriented, creative, scientifically-minded individuals to support our research mission. Our research lab is called the Surgical Innovation Lab, or "Surgilab," and focuses on Surgical Safety and Surgical Education. We are especially interested in how surgeons and other members of the surgical team communicate with each other, and how this impacts surgical safety. We often observe surgeries, interview surgical team members, videotape them interacting in the operating room and then interview them watching their videos. These interactions can have a big impact on the patient's outcome. We also investigate the biomechanics of performing surgery and how that relates to surgical error. We have many other projects, too.

These Research Assistant positions will help us in this research pursuit. We have multiple collaborators in UMKC's School of Medicine, in UMKC's other schools, and in national medical schools. We are looking for individuals who enjoys interacting with multiple people in different locations. Because we have so many projects, we are looking for people who is task and detail-oriented, can juggle multiple projects at once, and is an excellent communicator, both in-person and by email. Strong organization skills and a love for being challenged will help them to work on multiple tasks simultaneously.

Job duties for either title include, but are not limited to:

* Communicating with a diverse group of collaborators

* Contributing to the creative environment of the lab

* Pursue literature and writing scientific reviews

* Conduct interviews with surgeons and students

* Observing surgeries, conducting video and audio recordings, conducting interviews and journaling field notes in the operating room

* Managing, organizing, and cataloguing electronic data, including video and audio data

* Preparation and participation in research meetings and taking notes as needed

* Transcribe and code the interview with research subjects

* Supervising and training students on research duties in the lab and in the OR

* Maintaining and organizing statistical databases

* Basic statistical calculations using Excel and similar databases

* Organize and submit IRB submission protocols

* Assist with writing and submitting IRB applications and grant applications

* Assisting with writing and editing manuscripts and if you are excited enough to help with manuscript writing, then your contribution will lead to authorship

* Additional duties as assigned

As the job evolves the Research Assistant is expected to complete other research related duties as needed and assigned that may not be specifically listed above.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and 1-2 years of laboratory experience are required.

Candidates will be evaluated on experience working in a research environment, especially writing and submitting IRB proposals. Digital and Technologic skills and experience using Microsoft Excel are preferred over wet lab experience, as the job entails organizing and maintaining large media files and data sets. For example, the position requires heavy use of Adobe Premier software, so experience with video editing is preferred. Communications skills are a must, as you will interact with multiple research collaborators.
