Operates radiologic equipment and performs mammography procedures to assist physicians in the diagnosis of disease by performing the following duties. May also be involved with some x-ray exams and also performing bone density procedures. Assists with duties and projects assigned by Coordinator, Manager or Director. May be required to alternate shifts, weekends, holidays, and take call. May be asked to flex hours and overtime as necessary to provide quality patient care at assigned sites. Depending on site assigned, may also be required to perform radiographer job duties.
Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs breast imaging procedures.
- Corroborates patients clinical history with procedure, ensuring information is documented and available for use by the radiologist.
- Prepares the patient for procedures, providing instruction to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety.
- Selects and operates imaging equipment, image capture devices and accessory devices to successfully perform procedures.
- Positions patient to best demonstrate anatomic area of interest, respecting patient ability and comfort.
- Immobilizes patients as required for appropriate examination, explaining the need for breast compression during mammography.
- Determines exposure factors.
- Applies principles of radiation protection to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others.
- Evaluates images for technical quality, ensuring proper identification is recorded.
- Uses radiology information systems, including PACS, completes all required records and reports, and submits images for physician review and interpretation.
- Assumes responsibility for provision of physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures.
- Verifies informed consent for interventional procedures as required.
- Assists radiologist and physicians during procedures, performs breast specimen radiography as assigned.
- Practices aseptic technique as necessary.
- If assigned to perform radiographer duties oPrepares and administers contrast media as appropriate to procedures performed oPerforms non-interpretive fluoroscopic procedures under physician supervision and in compliance with policy. oPerforms surgical and portable radiographic exams.
- Initiates basic life support action when necessary.
- Provides patient education.
- Provides input for supply and equipment decisions, maintains control of inventory and supplies.
- Assumes responsibility for assigned area, reports equipment malfunction.
- Provides practical instruction for students and partners.
- Observes universal protocol, standard precautions, and appropriate patient identifiers.
- Applies principles of patient safety during all aspects of radiographic and mammographic procedures, including assisting and transporting patients.
- Prepares schedules, obtains and reviews previous mammograms, makes follow-up calls, and performs other tasks as assigned.
- Completes forms and maintains records, logs, and reports of work performed in accordance with MQSA.
- Utilizes appropriate scripting, barriers and patient identifiers. Working knowledge of PACS.

Education and Experience Graduate of an accredited radiography program. Radiographer experience preferred. Mammographer experience preferred. Certification and Licensure ARRT Radiography registration required, ARRT Mammography certification required or must be obtained within two years of hire IEMA-DNS radiography accreditation required if working in Illinois WI-DSPS radiographer license required if working in Wisconsin Approved CPR or BLS certification required within 90 days Skills and Abilities Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software. Order processing systems and Word Processing software.
