Research Associate - Advanced Substrate Protection and Engineered Materials

PPG has an opening for a Research Associate - Advanced Substrate Protection and Engineered Materials in Aerospace Materials Science and Technology. In this capacity you will lead a broad range of high impact projects on next generation substrate protection coating technologies and engineered materials to further position PPG as a differentiated supplier. Within your scope will be researching new approaches, technical project management and driving collaborations and relationships with outside companies and universities.

Key Responsibilities

• Initiate and execute scientific research and development projects on next generation substrate protection coating technologies and engineered materials for aerospace.
• Champion new research that introduces novel concepts to the industry leading to significant breakthroughs.
• Drive differentiated innovation.
• Leverage new technologies developed in corporate research center and other businesses for aerospace substrate protection and engineered materials applications.
• Direct cross-disciplinary research.
• Develop collaborations with external entities including industry and university.
• Develop intellectual property.
• Present ideas and results in effective technical presentations, write technical papers and contribute to research proposals.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Polymer Science, Mechanical Engineering or related area.
• Background in colloid and interface science, polymers, complex fluids or soft matter desirable.
• Knowledge of one or more areas such as surface science, wetting and adhesion, metallurgy, corrosion science, electrochemistry, composites, nanotechnology, 3D-printing or electromagnetic shielding is preferred.
• Familiarity with one or more characterization methods such as rheology, optical and electron microscopy, X-ray and neutron scattering, dynamic light scattering (DLS), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS,) secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) and sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy.
• Two or more years of post-graduate experience desirable with emphasis on front end innovation and novel technologies.
• A record of productive and creative research and development including peer-reviewed publications, presentations and patents.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Experience with R&D involving industry and/or university partners.
• Motivated self-starter with ability to participate in a collaborative environment.
• Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and interfacing with customers.
• Ability to set technical strategy based on customer needs or market trends.
• Experience with stage-gate process, scale-up and collaboration with other departments such as marketing, sales and manufacturing to commercialize new products
