Job Description

The Trauma Chaplain or PRN Chaplain - RISE Program, provides age-appropriate spiritual, emotional and sacramental ministry for patients, families and the staff of Truman Medical Centers in situations involving patient injury via gunshot wound(s). Chaplains serve through interdisciplinary care, 24/7 in-house, on the Health Sciences District campus. They maintain professional chaplain certification, and actively participate in continuing education. Trauma chaplains have a strong overall background and specialization in trauma intervention, including competency in delivering Psychological First Aid. Staff chaplains, serving cooperatively with other chaplains, provide appropriate religious/spiritual rites and services sensitive to the variety of spiritual/cultural/religious needs of patients, families and staff. Chaplains work in a team context, with accountability to one another and the Director of Chaplain Services.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited seminary, university or college with a Master's degree in a relevant area or equivalent. Usually this is a Master of Divinity degree. Other educational backgrounds will be considered for equivalency on a case-by-case basis.

  • Successful completion of Level II CPE, four units total from a nationally recognized and accredited training center for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE, NACC, and NAJC). This requirement may be adjusted based on skills and awareness acquired in ways other than CPE.

  • Four years of pastoral experience, which may include CPE, for a Staff Chaplain and one year of pastoral experience for a PRN Chaplain.

  • Strong motivation to carry out the services of the department as well as ability to identify with and be sensitive to the cultural values and patterns of patients served by Truman Medical Centers.

  • Ordination and ecclesiastical endorsement by a major faith group, e.g., as a Minister/Priest/Rabbi/Imam, and endorsement should be as a Chaplain.

  • Must be skilled in empathy, objective listening, inter-faith orientation, teamwork, self-direction, functioning in a high stress environment, providing culturally-competent spiritual care across the domains of cultural/racial/religious/gender diversity, and trauma intervention.

  • Current Board Certification as a Chaplain by a Professional National Association in Healthcare (APC, NACC, and NAJC) is expected for staff chaplains. Timelines for certification are negotiated with the Director for any staff chaplain who is not currently certified.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 2 years work experience in a major medical facility and trauma center.

  • Specialization in trauma intervention.
