In response to NC General Statute Chapter 116, Article 29 A(116-239.5), University of North Carolina at Charlotte is establishing a university laboratory school with the mission of "improving student performance in local school administrative units with low performing schools by providing an enhanced education program for student residing in those units and providing exposure and training for teachers and principals to successfully address challenges existing in high need school settings. The laboratory school shall provide an opportunity for research, demonstration, student support, and expansion of the teaching experience and evaluation regarding management, teaching, and learning."
Niner University Elementary School, the lab school for
UNC Charlotte, involves an integrated core curriculum for grades K-5 with an emphasis on research-validated practices and social emotional learning. Niner University Elementary seeks to serve learners "within a community-supported environment that fosters scholarship, engagement, and joy.

Primary Purpose of Position |
The primary purpose of the classroom teacher assistant is to work with students individually or in small groups to reinforce instruction, monitor performance, and support learning. They partner with teachers to establish a classroom environment that will assure success for all. This position also performs a variety of instructional and classroom management supports, as well as, necessary clerical tasks to support teachers. Teacher assistants work collaboratively with teachers, students, parents, colleagues, administrators, and school community members to support the mission of Niner University Elementary in Charlotte, NC. |
Summary of Position Responsibilities |
- Assists teachers with planning, organizing, implementing instructional activities, developing classroom procedures, and preparing necessary materials.
- Supports and reinforces learning by working with students individually or in small groups to help them master identified skills/concepts.
- Supervises students in the classroom, hallway, cafeteria, playground, bathroom area, and gymnasium, or on field trips.
- Enforces administration policies and rules governing students.
- Discusses assigned duties with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts.
- Observe students' performance and record relevant data to share progress.
- Monitors the safety and well-being of students; monitors student attitudes and encourages self-esteem; assists students with becoming increasingly independent.
- Monitors student behavior and helps maintain discipline in the classroom.
- Assists students with learning; reinforces and clarifies instructions; provides one-on-one assistance as needed.
- Performs general housekeeping duties in maintaining an orderly classroom.
- Performs various clerical duties as needed; develops and files incident reports; grades student papers and scores tests; makes copies; develops classroom display and instructional materials; maintains class files, etc.
- Participates in staff development workshops.
- Performs any other duties as assigned by the Administration.

Minimum Education/Experience |
- High school diploma.
- Minimum of 48 hours of college level coursework.
- Knowledge of daily routines of the classroom.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience |
- Associate's Degree with a concentration in Education.
- 2+ years experience working with elementary-age children.
- Experience working with at-risk populations.
