Job Description

This position is for a Principal Design Engineer of RF acoustic wave filters and EM at Skyworks San Jose Site.

If you are a motivated senior RF designer with skills and passion for designing complex multi-chip modules that will be used in most cellphones sold today, filter team of Mobile Solutions Business (MSB) is looking for you!

As a part of filter design team, you will work on complex RF modules to integrate multiple dice from a variety of technologies to deliver the best in class performance. You will be designing and meticulously analyzing RF circuits such as impedance-matching networks, couplers, filters and embedded passives.

The candidate is expected to explore, devise and prototype a variety of RF circuits in order to enhance the competitive position of MSB. The work involves close interaction with product teams to devise solutions that meet or exceed customer requirements. The successful candidate possesses a deep understanding of electromagnetic theory and RF circuits and preferably has worked on design of either LNA, PA or RF switches. The successful candidate will be responsible for EM analysis of active and passive RF front-end circuits. Work experience with integrated RF front end products is highly desired. The ideal candidate is adept in interfacing multiple RF components by devising proper routing, designing low loss impedance matching networks, conceive effective isolation and shielding techniques and subsequently analyze the entire module using advanced EM simulation tools.

Key Responsibilities

  • Integration of filters with other constituents of an RF front end module to deliver the highest possible performance
  • Designing embedded antenna multiplexer to support multi-band operations
  • EM analysis of RF assemblies using HFSS
  • Design acoustic wave filters for integration into RF modules, while meeting demanding schedules, best in class performance, and critical size and cost requirements
  • Follow Skyworks best engineering practices to ensure reliability, sustainability, and delivery of a high production yield
  • Drive new architectures and ideas to continuously improve filter and module performance to maintain a competitive edge for Skyworks products
  • Conduct design reviews and present quantitative data to demonstrate compliance to internal or customer specifications based on simulation and measured results
  • Work closely with module and systems teams to set appropriate goals for filter performance criteria
  • Interact with technology and fabrication teams to ensure continuous performance improvements and to steer BU roadmaps
  • Drive design methodologies to improve accuracy, efficiency, and first-pass success
  • Lead module co-design efforts, working directly with PA, LNA, switch, MCM, and other teams for a holistic approach to performance optimization

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering or equivalent with at least 5 years of job experience; or MS with 8 years of experience; or BS with 12 years of experience. Minimum 10 years of design experience in RF assemblies or multi-chip modules.
  • Significant expertise with acoustic filter and multiplexer designs; highly skilled in many filter design aspects
  • Deep understanding of RF fundamentals such as impedance matching, distributed systems, passive RLC and resonant circuits, noise, linearity, bandwidth and stability
  • Significant experience in EM simulation of filters or multi-chip modules (MCM)
  • In-depth, practical, hands-on experience on problem-solving and lab debugging skills from prototype to mass production.
  • Track record of analysis and implementation of on-die passives for high efficiency, wideband power amplifiers and low-noise amplifiers. Expertise in PA/LNA filter co-design and RF integration.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A positive, can-do attitude
  • Hands-on experience using RF lab equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Scripting for automation of EM simulations
  • Ability to resolve common simulation problems such as non-convergence, slow performance and low accuracy
  • Experience with thermal simulation or multi-physics simulation tools such COMSOL and ADS Electro-Thermal
  • Demonstrated project management and talent management skills
