How can you make an impact?

Our Digital Center of Excellence team is seeking a User Experience Manager to lead the design program for McGraw Hill's web and ecommerce platforms (mheducation.com) and other online experiences within the McGraw Hill global web ecosystem. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Design Systems and a passion for Accessibility in digital products. You will be responsible for driving the creation and maintenance of scalable, accessible, and user-centric design systems that enable seamless, intuitive, and inclusive user experiences across both B2B and B2C web and ecommerce platforms.

The User Experience Manager will collaborate closely with UX and interaction designers to ensure that all visual designs align with best practices in accessibility, innovative design system thinking, and brand consistency. These designs should not only elevate the McGraw Hill brand but also empower all users, regardless of ability, to successfully engage with our web and ecommerce experiences.

The User Experience Manager will lead a team including UX research and design leads, and work closely with analytics and product management teams to understand user needs. They will translate high-level customer and business requirements into visually compelling and accessible designs. This position also owns and maintains a design system roadmap, iteratively improving site experiences with consistent, accessible, and high-performing user interfaces.

This position offers the opportunity to shape the future of McGraw Hill's digital experiences, with a strong focus on creating inclusive, accessible, and innovative designs that resonate with all users.

This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within the United States and requires up to 25% travel for the year.

What you will do:

Leadership:

  • Recruit, mentor, and empower a design team, setting annual goals, conducting performance evaluations, and managing team resources.
  • Oversee research initiatives, ensuring they inform accessible and user-centered design decisions.

Design Systems Ownership:

  • Take charge of defining, building, and scaling the McGraw Hill design system, ensuring it enables consistent, accessible, and scalable web experiences across all platforms.
  • Establish and enforce design standards that prioritize Accessibility (WCAG 2.1 compliance) and usability across digital products.

Strategic UX/UI Ownership:

  • Lead UX/UI strategy for MHE.com, shaping navigation, page layouts, and user flows that enhance overall accessibility and user experience.
  • Set UX/UI priorities, ensuring design solutions are delivered on time, within budget, and meet business and accessibility goals.

Agile UX Strategy:

  • Define and implement UX strategies within an agile framework, ensuring adaptability and quick response to evolving user needs and accessibility requirements.

Cross-Team Collaboration:

  • Foster collaboration across design, development, and business teams, ensuring the adoption of the design system and accessibility best practices in all web and ecommerce initiatives.

We're looking for someone who has:

  • BA/BFA degree in Design (e.g., interaction, graphic, visual communications, product, industrial), HCI, CS, or a related field or equivalent practical experience
  • 7+ years of applicable experience or 5+ years of applicable experience and managerial experience preferred
  • A strong portfolio of projects demonstrating varied experience across digital, including web and mobile. Experience within ecommerce and/or ed tech a plus.
  • Expertise in standard UX software such as Figma, Sketch, InVision, Storybook. Proficiency with prototyping tools like Axure, UXPin is a plus.
  • Knowledge of web accessibility and experience with optimizing experiences for usability and accessibility.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and milestones efficiently. Experience within an Agile environment is a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate across functional areas, including technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience leading research priorities and leveraging findings and metrics to inform projects and priorities.

The pay range for this position is between $70,000 and $150,000 annually, however, the base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.An annual bonus plan may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical and/or other benefits, depending on the position offered.
