Position Summary

The Welding Group Leader plans and performs a variety of welding, design, fabrication, and maintenance repairs using robotic and manual welding in the manufacturing of FN America components and products. The Welding Group Leader assists the Production Supervisor with mentoring, monitoring, training, and scheduling of Welders.

Job Duties

  • Directs and performs welding operations on production components, machine components and plant equipment. Follows and creates operation control sheets, work orders, and rough sketches. Sets up, trouble shoots, and utilizes all weld fixtures.
  • Communicates with maintenance, tool room, metrology, quality and engineering as required to support daily operations.
  • Maintains and orders supplies, and raw materials needed for production and fabrication projects.
  • Directs Welders to meet production, quality, rework processes and fabrication requirements.
  • Monitors and assigns work order tasks for fabrication of fixtures, safety guard rails, water traps and other requests per work order system Manager Plus.
  • Operates, programs, and maximizes robotic welding cell. Performs all weld parameters edits to robot weld program for weld location, current, voltage, and travel speed.
  • Works with manufacturing engineer and tool room to maintain fixture and part quality.
  • Trains employees for all welding positions, metal finishing operations to smooth seams, joints or burred surfaces, using files, portable grinder, buffer or other applicable tools.
  • Inspects assemblies for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as coordinate-measuring machine (CMM), calipers, scales, micrometers, gages and visually inspects welds to determine acceptance based on referenced criteria.
  • Reads and correctly interprets component drawings, welding symbols and applicable codes and Mil standards
  • Operates gas welding, brazing, soldering, and any combination of arc welding processes including arc and gas cutting process.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Educational Requirements

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.

Experience Requirements

Five years' experience in related welding applications with a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification is required. Experience leading a team is preferred.

Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledgeable of all welding processes and applications to include, gas metal arc welding (GMAW), pulsed gas metal arc welding (GMAW-P), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) and soldering/brazing.
  • Knowledge of applicable welding codes.
  • Robotic welding operation and programming skills.
  • Knowledge of measurement equipment and methods.
  • Ability to follow policies and procedures.
  • Ability to make timely decisions, organize, and schedule associates and their tasks.
  • Ability to meet productivity standards, observe safety and security procedures, and adapt to changes in the work environment.
  • Ability to successfully pass all employer performance weld tests to meet certification standards of government and industry Codes and specifications.
  • Attention to detail and ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills with the ability to enter data.

Tools

Microsoft Office, ERP, QAD and SAP software.

Licenses/Certifications

Certified Welding Inspector certification is required.

Working Conditions

Typical manufacturing environment with exposure to loud noises and dangerous chemicals and machinery. Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds unassisted.
