The Extern will be a part of an approved internship program where they will have the opportunity to build knowledge and skills in a health care setting. The extern will be provided with exposure to project experience in a formalized program in preparation for careers in healthcare administration.

1. Ability to interact positively with people of all ages and backgrounds. Additional Job Description: Assist with a variety of chemical, microscopic, and bacteriologic tests and procedures to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases, following established standards and practices with the aid of automated, semi-automated, and/or manual methodologies. The extern will have the opportunity to observe and assist in a variety of lab procedures for educational enhancement during the clinical program to become a Medical Laboratory Technician.Essential Functions: Assist MLT's and MT's with the following responsibilities Organizes, labels and/or numbers specimens and sets up appropriate materials for test set-up Measures and dispenses specified amounts of specimen and reagent for test. *Runs patient sample through automated or manual protocols and monitors functions of test systems and instruments under the guidance of MLT or MT *Identifies possible cause of problem, implements initiates corrective actions under the guidance of MLT, MT, or Supervisor *Enters test results/-related data into computer after MLT or MT evaluates controls and found to be within limits. * Telephones and documents panic values * Sets up, performs, records programmed quality control materials according to established control limits * Learn basic quality control functions, evaluate acceptance criteria, and troubleshooting processes. * Comply with hospital and departmental attendance guidelines, Laboratory Regulatory guidelines, Compliance program, Code of Conduct, requiring adherence to all regulations, including HIPAA, and promptly reports all suspected violations of such programs and regulations * Supplements clerical functions to maintain efficient, timely reports. Answers phone and provides information concerning testing results without jeopardizing confidentiality of patient records * Learn and assist with routine scheduled maintenance, cleaning and decontamination of instruments, equipment and work areas not otherwise cleaned by housekeeping. Replenishes and rotates lab stocks of consumable materials and report needs to supervisor * Enhance professional growth and development of self and staff through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-services, meetings, and workshop opportunities. * Performs other duties as assigned Focus of the extern program includes: - Learn basic quality control functions and acceptability criteria - Assist performing automated and manual test procedures - Learn to troubleshoot and diagnose instrument error codes - Observing procedures for educational enhancement, including but not limited to cell morphology, body fluid analysis, and microbiology plate reading - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs such as in-services, meetings, and workshops Prerequisites: Completion of one (1) year and currently enrolled in a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Laboratory Scientist accredited program Essential Job-Related Experience Maintain a 2.5 or better GPA Must keep competencies current Must demonstrate critical thinking and effective communication skills Ability to maintain/update the computer competencies as required for the position Extern responsibilities include: - Automated and manual test procedures - Instrument use and maintenance requirements - Physician interaction with critical result reporting - Replenish and rotate lab stock, including reagent inventory Scheduled Weekly Hours: 16Shift: Varied (United States of America)Exempt/Non-Exempt: United States of America (Non-Exempt)Company: UNTWN Uniontown HospitalCost Center: 112 UNTWN Clinical LabsAddress: 500 W Berkeley Street Uniontown PennsylvaniaWVU Medicine is proud to be an Equal Opportunity employer.
