Carnegie Mellon University
vision insurance, paid time off
United States, Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh
5000 Forbes Avenue (Show on map)
Nov 10, 2024

We are looking for an outstanding Software Engineer to join our team to design and prototype new, novel, ultra-secure and ultra-resilient applications. We use and extend the latest research in cybersecurity and resilient system construction to drive the architecture, design, and implementation of the prototypes. We seek individuals who are passionate about advancing the state of the art and state of the practice for these future applications.

Qualified candidates will have experience in taking very high-level goals and translating them into specific requirements, and using those requirements to drive the overall architecture and construction of prototypes. We need both leaders who can define, refine and guide the vision as well as practitioners who can use their skill to make the vision into a reality that can seed production versions of future systems.

Ideal candidates will be familiar with the construction of secure and resilient systems, and with using relevant guidance and models, such as NIST Cybersecurity and Resilience and BSIMM (Building Security In Maturity Model.) Prototype development will use modern software engineering methods and techniques, so knowledge of containers, DevSecOps and Agile processes is expected. Knowledge of distributed systems, service meshes and use of encryption is helpful.

Team members should be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all stakeholders: customers, collaborators, team members and management. Candidates should be willing and able to proactively tackle tasks and deliver results.

Requirements:

  • BS in computer science, software engineering, information science, or information systems management with eight (8) years of experience or equivalent combination of training or experience; or MS in those disciplines with five (5) years of experience; or PhD in those disciplines with two (2) years of experience.
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.
  • Willingness to complete modest travel to various locations to support the SEI's overall mission.
  • You will be subject to a background investigation and you must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Defense security clearance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Agile and DevSecOps processes
  • Design and development of secure and resilient systems
  • Able to work independently
  • Strong communication skills - able to write reports, documentation, presentations

Desired Experience:

  • Experience in building network applications
  • Experience applying software engineering techniques in solution development
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new concepts and grow into new areas of work
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate alternative architectures, designs and 3rd party software, including generating reports detailing the comparative findings
  • Identifying, documenting and implementing recommended practices and reference architectures for organizations to develop resilient and secure software systems.
  • Develop and use tools to test and verify that software is correct and secure
  • Working with our customers to elicit needs and priorities, and translating those needs into requirements
  • Write reports and deliver presentations that explain the findings of research
  • Leading teams and partnering with customers to ensure quality, timely deliverables
