PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The goals of this project are to build capacity for community members to participate in regional initiatives to reduce community gun violence and assess community consensus on gun violence solutions in Greenville, NC. This project is a partnership with the Safe Communities Coalition of Pitt County. The objectives for the project are to conduct a survey of community members regarding local community gun violence. The purpose of this survey is to understand local perceptions of gun violence and potential solutions. We also plan to invite community members to participate in future qualitative focus groups regarding local community gun violence issues and solutions.
POSITION SUMMARY: The primary role of this position is to assist with engagement with community partners, recruitment, data analysis, and manuscript development.
LOCATION OF RESEARCH: This project will be conducted online but survey recruitment will also take place in community settings. Manuscript development can be completed remotely. Weekly meetings will occur in Belk Building, Room 3104.
EXPECTATIONS:

HNRS 3100 course, workshops held on selected Friday afternoon (Fall semester only - at 1 - 3 pm, Sept. 6, 13, 20, 27, 10/18, 11/8, 15, 22, & 12/3)
* Work as a member of a research team (faculty mentor, EC Scholar, and Community Partner)
* Complete research tasks assigned by the faculty mentor.
SPECIFIC TASKS: The GA is required to provide support as follows:
* Recruiting participants to survey through distribution of flyers, emails, and online ads to community members and organizations
* Contributing to literature review
* Writing introduction to manuscript
* Assisting with data analysis
* Mentoring EC scholars
START AND END DATE: Assistantship will run September 15, 2024 to April 30, 2025. The GA will be expected to be available 10 hours a week at mutually agreed upon times with the PI. |
