Job Description:
Nurse Extern II will deliver patient care under the continuous, direct supervision of the preceptor per KBN AOS 15. The nurse extern may perform nursing tasks as delegated under the direct supervision of a registered nurse in accordance with this section.
At minimum competency shall be verified by an official letter from the nursing program documenting that the nurse extern has successfully completed clinical tasks as a student in the program of nursing. Nurse Externs are expected to keep skills checklist with them at all times for preceptors to validate competency. The nurse extern will NOT independently assume the role, function or responsibility of licensed personnel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Administration of medication (under direct supervision of preceptor)
- Assessments of patient (under direct supervision of preceptor)
- Organize, plan and deliver patient care (under direct supervision of preceptor)
- Documentation of care performed (under direct supervision of preceptor)
- Evaluate outcomes of care (under direct supervision of preceptor)
- Participate in shift report to and from nurse (under direct supervision of preceptor).
Must be enrolled into a nursing program from an approved school of nursing * BLS * Successfully completed most recent clinical courses based on scholastic requirement of learning institution. * Successful completion of three semesters of an approved nursing program.
Minimum Education, Experience, Training and Licensures Required:
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. The Nurse Extern II must be actively enrolled in a board approved pre-licensure program of nursing and must provide documented proof of active enrollment.
- Experience: Successful completion of clinical coursework to reach senior level standing as determined by an accredited school of nursing. Provide documentation of skills performance evaluation or an official letter from the Nursing Program documenting the specific skills that the student has successfully completed to verify the student is individually educational prepared and has demonstrated clinical competence to perform delegated task/acts.
- List of Documented Skills Performance:
- Vital Signs: Blood Pressure, Pulse, Respirations, Temperature, Mediations: Non-Parenteral route: PO, Optic, Ophthalmic, and Nasal Parenteral routes: ID, SQ, IM, Traditional and Z-Track
- Non-Sterile Procedures: Patient transfer, Complete Bathing/Hygiene, Bed-making (occupied), Positioning of Patient (Semi fowler's, supine, lateral). Procedures: Sterile Gloving, Sterile Dressing Change, Hand Washing/PPE, Foley Catheter Insertion, Tracheostomy suction, NG placement to suctioning or feed and removal, insertion and removal of peripheral IV catheter, and change peripheral catheter to saline lock.
