Description

We are looking for a postdoc to contribute to our IES-funded project "Optimizing AI-based tutoring software for middle-school mathematics on smartphones." The postdoc will be guided by professors Vincent Aleven, Ken Koedinger, and Paulo Carvalho in Carnegie Mellon's Human-Computer Interaction Institute.

The aim of the project is to create and evaluate favorable conditions for homework with AI-based tutoring software for mathematics in middle school. The project explores three approaches to supporting middle-school math homework: data-optimizing the tutoring software, making it run on mobile phones (so students have more opportunities to work on their homework) and involving parents in their children's homework and supporting them in doing so with newly designed parent support features. The postdoc will primarily be involved in classroom studies to test the effects on student homework completion and learning of the different components and of the system as a whole.
