Essential Job Duties
The primary purpose of the Facilities Maintenance Technician position is to execute preventative maintenance protocols on pertinent plumbing systems and provide assistance to electrical systems, thereby mitigating shutdowns and operational disruptions. The incumbent will play a pivotal role in disseminating procedural guidelines to all stakeholders, ensuring adherence and uniformity throughout the department.

Key responsibilities and duties include, but not limited to:

  • Perform plumbing installation, repair, and maintenance tasks, including pipe fitting and secondary electrical system knowledge, within HVAC parameters
  • Work on various plumbing and piping systems, covering potable and non-potable water, waste drainage, sewers, heating hot water, steam, chilled water, compressed air, and natural gas

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair boilers, turbines, pumps, condensate receivers, steam lines, and related equipment, requiring pipe fitting expertise

  • Maintain and repair drainage, sewer, air, gas, and water systems in buildings, including lab drainage, ensuring effective operation

  • Install and test plumbing systems and fixtures, cutting, threading, assembling, and connecting pipes as needed

  • Develop solutions for standard and non-standard plumbing and steam repairs, occasionally addressing electrical and HVAC issues

  • Analyze faults in secondary electrical systems and control circuits, collaborating with team members when technical expertise is required beyond individual capacity

Other Responsibilities

  • Must participate in quarterly on-call program, carrying a pager for one week at a time. This occurs every ten to fourteen weeks. Must be able to work overtime and/or alternate shifts when necessary for emergencies and unforeseen circumstances
  • This position has been designated as essential personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrate through work, a depth of knowledge and skills for pneumatic controls, as well as DDC type of controls
  • Must be able to communicate verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters
  • Must be able to lift up to 90 pounds occasionally with or without reasonable accommodations

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the trades of HVAC, plumbing, and electrical

  • Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained
