Essential Job Duties
This position serves as a member of the Building Maintenance and Operations (BM&O) team and will be assigned to a specific zone maintenance shop at either NC State's original campus, Centennial Campus, or CBC (Veterinary School) campus. Zone maintenance shop technicians perform basic maintenance, operations, and repair of campus facilities including building HVAC, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems. Facilities Maintenance Technicians at this level are generally semi-skilled helpers in a particular trade or area and will participate in the department's initial entry training program.
Key responsibilities or duties include, but are not limited to:

  • May repair leaks, check boiler level, assist with pipe installation, basic PM operations and electrical/plumbing repair.
  • Provides technical assistance to others by troubleshooting simple facilities maintenance issues and determining their cause.
  • Cross train in all building equipment operations systems.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
  • Take readings on boilers and chillers and note and report any discrepancies found.
  • Maintain accurate records on all equipment.
  • Check chemical levels as assigned.
  • Ensure safety of the University by maintaining equipment.
  • Perform all work duties in compliance with established safe work practices.
  • Follow all safety and health rules, policies and procedures.

Other Responsibilities

  • May be required to be on-call.
  • This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
  • This position may assist with snow and ice removal under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
  • Some experience in HVAC, steam, plumbing, and electrical trades.
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in the maintenance or building system trades.
Required License or Certification
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
