Essential Job Duties |
The Battle lab examines digestive diseases through a developmental biology lens. Using cutting-edge molecular and cellular biology tools in the context of animal and organoid model systems, they seek to delineate fundamental mechanisms of gastrointestinal development and disease. The long-term goal is to apply the knowledge gained to gastrointestinal diseases, including short bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, metaplasia such as Barrett's esophagus, and cancer, to generate new therapeutic drugs and engineered tissues for transplantation.
Their group has strong connections with gastrointestinal researchers at
UNC Chapel Hill and Duke
University through the
NIH funded Center for Gastrointestinal Biology and Disease (
CGIBD).
Primary duties include but are not limited to:
- Use molecular biology and histology techniques with mouse and human cells as well as with mouse and human tissues.
- Provide support in managing mouse colonies for the lab including basic husbandry tasks, genotyping, and collection of tissue for downstream analyses.
- Prepare cell culture medias and maintain cell lines including pluripotent stem cells, primary cells, 3D organoid cultures, and established cell lines from mouse, rat, or human origin.
- Record completed and accurate laboratory methods and results in an online laboratory notebook.
- Use appropriate tools and software to document and analyze collected data.
- Communicate summaries of experimental results to the lab staff and principal investigator.
- Assist with the evaluation, interpretation and assessment of experimental data and quality control of assays.
- Participate in meetings with principal investigator and research staff.
- Oversee ordering and maintaining supply of inventories.
- Operate, calibrate and perform routine maintenance on specialized equipment used in research.
- Prepare solutions and necessary reagents following established protocols and techniques.
The selected candidate will work under the direct guidance of Dr. Michele Battle and a senior lab member. Candidates should be willing to take initiative to help achieve laboratory goals, demonstrate good organizational and time management skills, and be able to work independently as well as cooperatively to achieve lab goals.
We hope you will consider joining us! |
