The NC State Veterinary Hospital (VH), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The mission of the Veterinary Hospital is three-fold:

- Expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students and house officers from the College of Veterinary Medicine.

With over 17 clinical services staffed by board certified specialists, many of whom are not only nationally but also internationally renowned, the VH is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. The Small Animal Emergency & Critical Care (
ECC) service at NC State Veterinary Hospital is a busy service that is comprised of
ACVECC Diplomates, staff emergency veterinarians,
ECC residents,
ECC Interns, and over 20 certified veterinary technicians.
The successful candidate will be expected to be an active member of the section and contribute to our delivery of exceptional patient care and exemplary teaching. |
Essential Job Duties |
Serve as a small animal
ECC Clinical Instructor Veterinarian primarily during swing weekday and weekend shifts.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Receive and manage emergency and hospitalized patients.
- Supervise and mentor small animal interns, residents, and senior veterinary students receiving primary emergencies and referral cases from surrounding veterinary practices.
- Provide clinical and didactic emergency and critical care instruction for house officers and senior veterinary students.
- Oversee and consult on ICU patients and practice collaborative medicine with specialty services.
- Responsible for communicating with referring veterinarians regarding cases, and with other services at the teaching hospital including surgery, cardiology, internal medicine, neurology, ophthalmology, radiology, oncology, theriogenology, dentistry, and anesthesia.
- Support the ER, Hospitalist, ICU and extracorporeal therapy services.
- Conduct didactic and clinical case teaching rounds with students enrolled in VMC 960 (4th-year clinical rotation in emergency medicine).
- Participate in formal evaluations ("grading") of 4th-year students rotating through VMC960.
- Participate in ECC HO and rotating intern didactic training.
- Engage in pre-clinical student training as opportunities arise.
- Administrative duties including committee assignments on communication issues between reception, technicians, and doctors and optimizing student learning on emergency clinical rotation (VMC 960).

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
DVM (or equivalent degree) and eligibility for veterinary licensure (or faculty licensure) in the State of NC required. |
Other Required Qualifications |
- Extensive experience in emergency/critical care medicine.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis and up to 100 with assistance.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Prefer a minimum of three years receiving emergency cases and/or a small animal rotating internship.
- Preference will be given to candidates that are residency trained in Emergency and Critical Care.
