Essential Job Duties
This position serves as a lead member of the Utilities Distribution shop team of energy utility technicians. The shop supports all systems on NCSU's main campus, Centennial campus, and CBC (Veterinary School) campuses and maintains these systems for critical research and animal hospital buildings. Utilities Distribution shop personnel perform skilled mechanical/piping work and general maintenance/repair of underground steam, condensation, storm water, chilled water, sanitary sewer, and domestic cold/hot water systems.

Key responsibilities or duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Works independently and/or plans and directs others in the performance of diagnostics, maintenance and repairs to critical steam, condensate, chilled water, potable water, storm/sanitary sewer and steam tunnel systems.
  • Lead/direct piping installation, and other equipment for generating and controlling steam.
  • Lead/direct installing related equipment, pumps, fans, PRV's, etc. on complex steam systems.
  • Lead investigation and analyze steam, chilled water, and domestic water piping systems to determine problems and recommend corrective action.
  • Analyze defects and malfunctions in complex plumbing systems, make recommendations, lead direct repairs to eliminate leaks, replaces faulty fittings and other parts.
  • Identifies options, develops solutions, and takes action when responding to customer requests.
  • Reviews customer requests and directs activities based on situational needs.
  • Serve as backup ORC for wastewater collection system permit compliance.
  • Lead/review the wastewater inspections for grease traps and SSO's. Discuss noncompliance results to the shop supervisor. Direct corrective action.
  • Plan/conduct annual inspections of wastewater distribution systems. Report results to the Environmental Engineer.
  • Test and certify backflow preventers. Repair as needed.
  • Plan/coordinate outages with building liaisons and other Facilities Operations shops.
  • Provide after-hours support for critical building functions as needed.
  • Must be able to interpret blueprints, and direct fabrication from sketches and verbal descriptions.

Other Responsibilities

  • This position is subject to emergency call back, weekend work and rotational on-call.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment of safety glasses, safety shoes, and ear plugs.
  • Additional safety equipment to include respirator, welding leathers, welding shield, hardhat, and/or other gear related to the work site.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Other Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of steam, storm water systems, chilled water lines, sewer systems, domestic water and related equipment in an industrial setting. Also, knowledge of related/auxiliary equipment for these systems. This includes use of hand tools and diagnostic equipment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 90 pounds frequently and up to 150 pounds occasionally, with or without reasonable accommodations.
  • The ability to perform tasks associated with the assigned trade on an advanced level.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the maintenance and operation of utility distribution systems, consisting of steam/condensate, chilled water, storm/sanitary sewer and potable water. Experience in a university or municipality setting highly desired.
  • Heavy equipment experience with- excavator, back hoes and compaction equipment.
  • Experience with steam pressure reducing valves, motors, pumps, air compressors, fans, and assist with maintaining a proper water treatment program.
  • Able to repair and maintain plumbing related systems to include air, gas, water and waste disposal systems.
  • Basic torch work to include welding, brazing, cutting, soldering, etc.

Required License or Certification

  • Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
  • Cross connection/Backflow preventer test certification required within 60 days of hire.

  • ORC License within 1 year of hire.
