Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences ( FCS) in Mecklenburg County is responsible for planning, executing and evaluating effective and comprehensive family and consumer sciences programs that meet the needs of the county's limited resource population and align with the mission and vision of the Cooperative Extension Program at NC A&T State University. The Agent will be responsible for the planning, management, and delivery of programs that include non-formal education and training with an emphasis on community development regarding urban agriculture and local food systems.

The Agent collaborates with county and community-based organizations to deliver innovative experiential learning and outreach programs, and recruit program participants; determines program needs and priorities by conducting needs assessments; and evaluates data collected from multiple sources including advisory committee members, county residents, and program participants. The Agent provides classes, workshops, training, and consultations including financial education, career readiness, business development, digital skills, and resource acquisition to youth, ages youth K-12, and adults.

The program emphasis will align with N.C. A&T's SAPLINGS (System Approach to Promote Learning and Innovation for the Next Generations project, part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's new initiative, "From Learning to Leading: Cultivating the Next Generation of Diverse Food and Agriculture Professionals ( NEXTGEN)."
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Cooperative Extension Program at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is an educational outreach organization within the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. The program, in collaboration with North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service at North Carolina State University, provides educational information, programming and technical assistance to limited-resource audiences relative to various issues in four program areas - Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, Community and Economic Development, and 4-H Youth Development. Together with its partners - NCSU, U.S. Department of Agriculture, state and county governments, a dynamic and resourceful system is formed. In addition to campus operations, The Cooperative Extension Program at North Carolina A&T State University has professionally staffed offices in almost half of the 100 counties in North Carolina and on the Cherokee Indian Reservation.

Mecklenburg County is a county located in the southwestern region of the state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,115,482. Making it the second-most populous county in North Carolina (after Wake County) and the first county in the Carolinas to surpass one million in population. Its county seat is Charlotte and is the state's largest city. N.C. Cooperative Extension in Mecklenburg County is part of the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department, with the vast resources of that department available to Cooperative Extension for programming efforts. Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in family and consumer sciences, child or human development, nutrition, or a related field of study; or a bachelor's degree in these or related fields in addition to 3 years of work experience in Extension or working/teaching in diverse communities, with an understanding that a Master's degree will be pursued.
  • Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Ability to work and interact with diverse populations.
  • Computer literacy (proficiency in MS Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Office)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple demands and set priorities.
  • Valid Driver's license and personal transportation.
  • Ability to travel and work after hours/weekends as needed.
  • Must be able to lift and carry training supplies, publications and equipment needed for training programs.


Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Master's degree in field related to family and consumer sciences as specified above, and two or more years of experience in Extension or family programs.
  • Experience planning programs and working in diverse communities.
  • Experience working effectively as a team member.
  • Ability to manage time and resources.
  • Experience and knowledge in mass media, marketing and presentations.
  • Skills in leadership, budgeting and public relations.

Required License or Certification
Valid NC Driver's License required to operate state or local county vehicles
