ITRE is an institutional research center administered by North Carolina State University. Located within the University's visionary Centennial Campus,
ITRE conducts surface, water, and air transportation research, while providing professional training and educational opportunities. The Institute serves all 16 statewide campuses in the University of North Carolina (
UNC) system and partners with transportation professionals around the globe.
The University of North Carolina, Office of the President, designated
ITRE in a Memorandum of Understanding to work in partnership with the Technical University of Lisbon in the area of Transportation and Environment.
ITRE became a member of the North Carolina Transportation Consortium in 2002, and was the lead institute for the Southeastern Transportation Center (a
USDOT University Transportation Center) from 1989-1995.

Essential Job Duties |
The Training Specialist will conduct training programs for road maintenance personnel and assist the Work Zone Certification Program Manager in managing ITRE's work zone safety and maintenance training program. This position will significantly contribute to the strategic planning, coordination, and development of ITRE's work zone safety and maintenance training programs.
The Training Specialist's duties include, but are not limited to:
* Providing innovative and educated solutions to the
LTAP Director and Work Zone Certification Program Manager regarding the training program's needs
assessment, curriculum design, and program evaluation.
* Providing on-site training services throughout North Carolina, in other states, and internationally.
* Evaluating training feedback (both by official feedback forms and by in-class observation) to monitor and improve course effectiveness and make any necessary
adjustments to training programs.
* Developing and updating training materials using in training program - pocket guides, handbooks and notebooks.
* Researching and developing innovative training approaches specifically for the targeted audiences of the work zone safety and maintenance training program.
* Identifying and managing resources to ensure the most cost effective and efficient application of resources.
* Assisting with the development and coordination of the annual
NCDOT Maintenance Training Project.
* Assisting in providing articles on work zone safety for the
LTAP quarterly newsletter. |

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
Bachelor's degree; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Other Required Qualifications |
* A solid understanding of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (
MUTCD) - in particular, Part 6 of the
MUTCD
* High-level knowledge of highway maintenance operations and procedures
* Excellent classroom presentation skills and classroom management
* Ability to travel and to drive long distances
* Training experience with highway safety, temporary traffic management, highway maintenance activities
* Classroom management experience
* Experience generating publications |
Preferred Qualifications |
* B.S Civil Engineering or very closely related field and five years of experience in any combination of course development, class presentation, using the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, work zone traffic control management, highway maintenance work operations.
* Successful completion of
NHI Instructor Development Course, or the ability to complete this course within four years of hire
* Professional Engineering license, or the ability to obtain this license within four years of hire |
