The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering offers undergraduate degrees in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, and Environmental Engineering. Graduate programs are offered with specialties in Computing and Systems, Construction Engineering, Water Resources, Coastal and Environmental Engineering, Structural Engineering and Mechanics, Transportation Systems and Materials, Geotechnical / Geoenvironmental Engineering, and Mechanics and Materials.
With over 53 faculty, more than 770 undergraduate students and over 300 graduate students, NC State University's Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering ( CCEE) is one of the largest departments in the country and more importantly, one of the best. In 2022, our Environmental Engineering and Civil Engineering degrees were ranked at 21st and 26th in the country, respectively.
At the graduate level we offer the traditional Master's and Ph.D. degrees with the opportunity to specialize in a wide range of topics in civil, construction, and environmental engineering. We are also a leader in distance education. Students can earn a Master of Civil or Environmental Engineering degree without ever setting foot on campus. CCEE's online Master of Civil Engineering program was ranked No. 4 in the country on US News & World Report's 2022 Best Online Programs list.

Essential Job Duties
The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering ( CCEE) at NC State seeks to hire a communications manager. This person will be responsible for managing our publicity initiatives, including but not limited to, developing annual communications plans and calendars, developing, posting and updating written, photo, and video content for our web site, social media, and public display screens; conducting regular design updates to the department's web site; developing stories about our education, research, and service programs in conjunction with students, faculty, staff, and alumni= for our print and digital newsletters; writing press preleases; and overseeing freelancers to develop specialty communications (such as brochures or focused web pages), developing measures for tracking and reporting results of communication outreach. We seek a colleague to 'own' the storytelling for our department.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent reporting and writing skills. The communications manager will develop stories for a variety of audiences, including prospective and current students, alumni, policymakers, and researchers at other institutions A key skill is translating research activities for a general audience, so experience with technical and/or scientific writing is preferred. Tasks will include writing feature articles about student activities, department events, research findings, student and faculty awards, and other topics and editing contributions from faculty and staff on our department's Publicity Committee.
  • Experience with photography, video production, and digital storytelling. The communications manager will develop content for our web site, social media (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X), newsletter, magazine, and on-campus public display screens. Responsibilities will include taking photos and short videos, either to accompany articles or to stand alone. r
  • Responsibilities will include overseeing design templates for the department. The department maintains a subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud and will provide equipment for photography and computing.
  • Experience with content management systems, including WordPress, is required. The communications manager will post stories in a variety of management systems, including for social media channels and web site. The communications manager will also maintain a shared archive of communications content.
  • Ability to operate independently. Faculty will provide ideas for stories, but the communications manager will be encouraged to develop plans, communications calendars, story ideas and publicity initiatives on their own. Experience with managing a publication and communication schedule is helpful.
  • Supervisory skills. Due to the number of communication-related tasks, an ability to hire and oversee students and freelancers is essential. The applicant should have experience with managing small teams.

Qualifications


Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Excellent reporting and writing skills.
  • Experience with photography and video production, and graphic design.
  • Basic knowledge of multiple social media platforms, Adobe Creative Cloud, and Wordpress.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with technical and scientific writing.
  • Experience with coordinating communications for academic programs.
  • Experience in storytelling to diverse audiences.
