Position Highlights The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix (COM-P) is seeking a licensed Psychologist to provide psychological evaluation, crisis management and counseling for medical students. We are looking for a strong behavioral health generalist, with a robust understanding of stressors and mental health difficulties encountered during medical education. The ideal candidate will also be well versed in multicultural models of care.

This full-time position will be responsible for providing mental health counseling, triage, and emergency/crisis assessment services for medical students at COM-P. This position will interface with other campus departments and graduate medical education residency and fellowship training programs. The position will operate from the COM-P and offer in-person and telehealth options. This position will be overseen by the Director of Wellness, and work closely with the College's undergraduate and graduate medical education mental health team and leadership.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide culturally competent, evidence-based psychological and other diagnostic evaluation, risk assessment, counseling, crisis management, and referrals, as indicated, to UArizona medical trainees (individuals & groups).
  • Advocate for medical trainees, and evaluate and propose institutional policies and protocols to mitigate stressors affecting medical student health and wellness.
  • Provide developmentally-appropriate skills for professional sustainability.
  • Triage medical students in crisis and provide specialized counseling to improve medical trainee resiliency to help prevent and/or minimize anxiety, depression, and burnout.
  • Work with medical trainees to develop new organizational strategies for those who are struggling to adapt to demanding schedules or balancing relationships due to academic needs.
  • If and when pharmacological treatment is necessary, work in partnership with residents, primary care physicians, psychiatrist, or contract psychologist.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation in an electronic health record system.
  • Host both in-person and video conferencing appointments depending on medical trainee preference and schedules.
  • Maintain monthly count of therapy sessions and common themes.
  • Assist the Director of Wellness to guide debriefing groups for programs, as well as participate in mental health presentations, and additional related requests from College departments.
  • Based on medical trainee needs, create and deliver group sessions/proposals/presentations to help with known stressors and barriers to care when seeking mental health treatment.
  • Attend and participate in the Wellness Committee.
  • Create and participate in research around medical trainee wellness, burnout, and mental health, and provide data and reports on usage and high-level themes to the wellness team and other needed departments/leadership.
  • Ensure compliance and complete documentation for LCME & ACGME accreditation requirements for medical trainee mental health services.
  • Annually provide up-to-date resources to include on the internal Wellness website.
  • Develop annual review of program outcomes, growth and future goals.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience providing clinical services for the wide range of presenting issues seen in college students, including assessing and managing risk and the treatment of acute concerns (e.g., eating disorders, depression, anxiety, elf-harm).
  • Demonstrated understanding of social, developmental, and psychological issues and challenges faced by diverse populations of students within a higher education setting.
  • Appreciation and knowledge of the process of intersectional identity development.
  • Ability to manage a very full caseload within a long term and time-limited clinical setting.
  • Ability to manage crisis situations, including suicidality and danger to others.
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner.
  • Strong outreach, consultation, and written and verbal communication skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • PhD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology required.
  • Current valid license in state of Arizona or ability to obtain a license in six (6) months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications * Experience with crisis intervention.

* Excellent grasp of psychopathology and diagnostic systems.

* Currently licensed as a Psychologist in the State of Arizona.

* Experience working with medical students or residents.

* Experience in utilizing a brief therapy model of care.

* Experience and comfort in risk assessment, crisis assessment and management, mental health triage, brief psychotherapy and group treatment approaches.

* Experience using a variety of screening and assessment instruments.

* Demonstrated knowledge and sensitivity to a wide range of personal diversity and multicultural issues, including trauma informed care.

* Experience working with multi-cultural clients; perspective on working with first generation college students and underrepresented populations.

* Experience/comfort speaking to groups of individuals about resources and other mental health issues.
