Stony Brook University: Provost Office: College of Arts & Sciences: History Location Stony Brook, New York Open Date Jul 23, 2024 Deadline Dec 01, 2024 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time Description The Department of History at Stony Brook University (State University of New York) is delighted to invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of History in the area of modern Chinese history. Area of expertise is open. We particularly encourage scholars with interests in the following areas: history of science, technology and medicine; energy and environmental history; imperial borderlands, transregional, or multiethnic histories; political economy including capitalism; gender and diaspora. We are, however, open to applications beyond this scope. We expect the scholar in question to have completed significant work in a Chinese language and archives. We seek a scholar who is enthusiastic about mentoring graduate students and who will offer courses aligned with one or more of the Department's graduate thematic clusters: Global connections, empire, capitalism; Health, science, environment; Race, citizenship, migration; Religion, gender, cultural identity; States, nations, political cultures. The incumbent should be prepared to teach undergraduate lecture and seminar courses as well as graduate seminars from late imperial to contemporary Chinese history, and other topics of interest. This faculty member will have opportunities for affiliation and collaboration with interdisciplinary Stony Brook programs, institutes, and centers aligned with their interests. These may include units in the College of Arts and Sciences such as Asian and Asian-American Studies (AAAS), the Institute for Globalization Studies, the Humanities Institute, the Center for Changing Systems of Power, and others, as well as those located in other parts of Stony Brook, such as Technology and Society, Public Health, and Sustainability Studies. Shortlisted candidates will be expected to provide a research statement and teaching statement with sample syllabus, and possibly other materials. The Department expects to conduct remote interviews with shortlisted candidates and then host finalists on campus in early 2025.
