Your Job

We are currently recruiting for a Microbiologist for our Technical Center in Neenah, WI. This person will be responsible for planning, developing, and participating in microbiological tests to identify and characterize the presence of microbes using experience and judgement to modify methods and procedures, identify problems and deficiencies using traditional microbiological laboratory equipment and techniques.

Our Neenah Technical Center is the central site for research, development, and lab services for Georgia-Pacific North American Consumer Products Division. The research and development areas include: Commercial and Retail towels, tissues, napkins, and dispensers, Dixie products and process development.

What You Will Do

  • Prepare samples and perform microbiological analysis of samples of a variety of different matrices using aseptic techniques and good microbiology laboratory practices.
  • Ensure adequate supplies of sterile culture media, test reagents, and testing supplies (inventory management).
  • Cross trained on the various laboratory methods including, but not limited to bacterial and fungal plating, identification of microbes through physiological and cultural characteristics and microscopic examination.
  • Identify basic technical issues, atypical or out-of-specification test results, instrument malfunctions and methodology problems, and initiate the investigation process to resolve and correct.
  • Maintain a sterile work environment and undergo cleaning procedures as necessary to ensure ongoing proper workflow.
  • Interpret and evaluate data in terms of accuracy, precision, trends, and quality control requirements and provide scientific interpretation of results to customers (scientists, executives, engineers).
  • Assist in writing and revising methods and SOPs.
  • Perform method validations or verifications with minimal supervision.
  • Learn new techniques and technologies as appropriate.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Associate Degree in Microbiology, Biology, or related science field.
  • Preferred 1-2 years of experience working in a microbiology laboratory performing microbiological testing both independently and as a team.
  • Experience and applied knowledge of the standard principles, terminology, practices, techniques, and instrumentation commonly used in a microbiology lab setting (pipetting, plating, counting, microbial identification, and media preparation).
  • Capacity to review, analyze, and interpret data to author results communications to meet customers' need(s).
  • Technical and industry-specific knowledge or experience to identify, analyze, and resolve client questions or laboratory or data issues.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel & PowerPoint.
  • Willing and able to travel up to 10% of the time.
  • Must be able to lift 20 pounds and be able to stand for up to 8 hours.

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in a microbiology laboratory
  • Demonstrated competency with complex data analysis and interpretation as well as good judgement in making recommendations based on that data.
  • Ability to provide technical support and subject matter expertise to operations, quality, and product developers.
  • Experience and knowledge of industry test methods (USP, ASTM, ISO, TAPPI, FDA, CTFA).
  • Knowledge of or previous experience in the paper manufacturing industry.
