OVERVIEW:

Building codes are a vital component of modern building design and construction. Compliance with the codes ensures the health and safety of building occupants. This role provides professional consultation with clients on building, fire, plumbing, energy, and accessibility codes to support the client's needs on construction and building engineering projects.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:



  • Provide code-related consulting services to clients in the architecture, real estate investment & management, and building engineering industries.
  • Consulting services include, but are not limited to, providing code analysis and interpretation via email, phone call, and in-person or remote meetings; drafting memos to address code issues; meeting with local officials and fire departments on the client's behalf; and supporting the in-house engineering and design teams.


  • Perform design reviews of proposed projects including plan review for egress, life safety, fire safety, accessibility, and plumbing; draft reports outlining applicable code requirements and analyzing whether the proposed project meets the requirements; and perform zoning reviews of proposed projects.
  • Perform on-site building surveys to assess code compliance with respect to building, fire, accessibility, or plumbing codes.
  • Draft survey reports outlining the findings of the survey and suggested remediation of non-compliant conditions.
  • Collaborate with project teams to design solutions to challenges in building design and construction where strict code compliance is not possible.
  • Prepare and submit code variance requests to state-level boards to support the proposed design.


REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION and CERTIFICATIONS:



  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or Engineering required.
  • General familiarity with ICC and NFPA codes is desired, but not required.
  • Background in Architecture, Civil/Construction, and Fire Protection background is preferred, but not required.
  • 5 + years experience in the architecture, construction, or building engineering industries. An entry-, junior-, or mid-level consultant would be considered for this role.


REQUIRED SKILLS and ABILITIES:



  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation is a must.
  • Must possess excellent verbal communication skills and technical writing abilities.
  • Must be outgoing and able to professionally interact with staff, clients and building owners.
  • Must be able to perform under pressure and meet deadlines.


The Salary Range for this position is $140,000.00 - $170,000.00 and is dependent on education, experience, location and certifications/licensure.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS, OVERTIME, and TRAVEL:

Work will be performed both in an office setting and at outside locations (i.e., Client's office, industrial, construction, and/or residential sites). Employee is frequently required to stand, walk on slope roofs, sit, climb ladders, bend, climb inside attics and crawl under homes and tunnels, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, hear, and drive a motor vehicle to job sites. Employee may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Employee must be sharp, focused, and alert when conducting site inspections, speaking, and interacting with clients, preparing written reports of findings, and testifying in deposition or trial. Clear vision and depth perception are also necessary.

Overtime - This position is classified as salaried with an exempt FLSA status. Regular working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with one hour for lunch. There will be periods where overtime will be required, which the employee will need to comply with in order to meet the demands of the position.

Travel Requirements - This position requires up to 25% local/regional travel. Some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required. Expected regular travel in the Greater Boston Area, but may include some national and international travel.
