Job Summary:
The University of Wisconsin-Madison, established in 1848 and considered one of the world's outstanding public research universities, invites applications and nominations for the position of Grainger Dean of the College of Engineering (CoE). UW-Madison, the flagship campus of the Universities of Wisconsin, is a land-grant university committed to excellence in teaching, research, and public service. UW-Madison has an annual budget of nearly $4 billion, a student body exceeding 50,000, and a community of more than 25,000 faculty and staff.
The Dean serves as the chief academic and executive officer of the college with responsibility for developing and implementing the strategic vision for the college, faculty and staff development, personnel oversight, budget planning and management, student academic affairs, facility management and development, advancement, building and strengthening connections with internal and external stakeholders, and fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment. The college currently enrolls 4,800 undergraduate and 1,500 graduate students across eight academic departments (Biomedical Engineering, Chemical and Biological Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Nuclear Engineering and Engineering Physics). In addition, it offers short-courses and advanced degrees to practicing engineers through the Office of Interdisciplinary Professional Programs. The college currently has 220 tenured or tenure-track faculty, 34% of whom are assistant professors; 650 staff; and a budget of $245M. The budget includes research expenditures of $140M.
With the design of an approved 400,000 gross square foot multi-disciplinary instructional and research building that will cost $347M approaching completion, the Dean will have the opportunity to oversee the occupancy of the building in 2028. The new building will enable the college to increase the number of opportunities for students to study engineering, increase the number of faculty, expand the research enterprise, and strengthen partnerships with industry. This opportunity will enable the Dean to continue the growth of the college.

Responsibilities:
The Dean of the College of Engineering: - Leads the college in the development and implementation of its vision and strategic framework; - Promotes growth in strategic areas of research, scholarship, and academic programs to nurture their development and maintain excellence; - Encourages continued excellence and growth in the instructional mission of the college, including strong mentorship and support of programs; - Provides personnel oversight for the college, including the recruitment and retention of a diverse, talented, and highly productive faculty and staff, as well as support for professional growth and development; - Demonstrates a commitment to fostering an inclusive working and learning environment where all can flourish. - Helps to ensure the development, support, mentoring, and supervision of the administrative staff of the college; - Promotes administrative excellence through collaboration across college units; - Supports the college's contribution to living the Wisconsin Idea - Plays a lead role in the development and administration of budgets for academic and non-academic units; - Establishes financial goals and engages directly in securing external funding from government agencies, foundations and corporations, alumni, and private donors; - Provides leadership and partnership over the contributions of the college's Industrial Advisory Board; - Works collaboratively toward meeting the physical space needs of the college, including research, instructional, and community spaces;
- Is responsive to student needs, including support for curricular and extracurricular activities, and supports the provision of services, such as students mental health and career planning, that help ensure the success of students in the college. - Represents the College of Engineering in local, state, Universities of Wisconsin, and national and international forums/partnerships; - Participates actively in the recruitment, development, retention, and evaluation of department chairs, faculty, and other personnel; - Provides leadership toward enrollment goals and partnerships with the UW-Madison Division of Enrollment Management; - Plays a leadership role in connecting the scholarship of those inside the college with the broader community; - Provides leadership in external communications, alumni engagement, and development activities; - Assures that all units in the college are compliant with university, state, and national requirements and standards; - Supports and leads efforts to ensure continuing accreditation for all academic departments; - Supports and fosters a culture of compliance with applicable policies and laws; - Collaborates with other deans and campus leaders (including shared governance) in activities that support the vision and mission of UW-Madison.
