Job Summary:

The Department of Gender and Women's Studies is searching for a distinguished scholar of women, gender, or sexuality who will serve as the Department's chair for five years. Field of scholarly expertise is open. Scholars who complement current strengths of the department and who might lead the department into new fields are equally welcome to apply. New fields of particular interest include feminist science studies, economics, data science, geography, education, transnational and Indigenous feminisms, and international relations. The successful candidate will advance the educational mission of the College of Letters & Science, that values, prioritizes, and actualizes evidence-based and student-centered teaching and (undergraduate student) mentoring. They will contribute to an environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community.


Responsibilities:

As a member of the faculty within UW-Madison, the successful candidate will teach graduate and undergraduate students, conduct research, and perform department, university, and community service. The successful candidate will serve as chair for five years, teach a reduced course load (1:0) for the duration of their administrative position, and maintain a research program. After 5 years, they will return to the faculty (and assume a 2:2 teaching load).

The Department has experienced significant and exciting growth in the past few years, hiring stellar new faculty across a wide range of disciplines. This means that roughly half of our 20 faculty are untenured. In our nearly 50 years as a program and a department, we have a 100% record of granting tenure to our faculty, and we take great pride in effectively mentoring and supporting our junior faculty through the tenure process. We seek a candidate who will bolster our capacity to skillfully navigate both the opportunities and the challenges of this robust expansion.

Additional Chair responsibilities include:
-Making requests to the Dean for faculty searches, appointing search committees, and ensuring that searches adhere to all University policies;
-Overseeing the post-tenure review process and promotions to Associate and Full Professor;
- Appointing faculty and staff members to department committees;
- Nominating faculty for research and teaching awards;
- Handling personnel issues related to faculty and staff;
- Facilitating team-building within the shared-governance structure;
- Articulating and implementing a commitment to mentoring faculty, staff, and students (especially those of historically underrepresented or marginalized identities and backgrounds) with a view to promoting thriving and a sense of belonging;
-Working with faculty and academic staff on maintaining and expanding the research and teaching excellence of the department;
-Providing budgetary oversight through shared governance and in collaboration with college administration.

Ph.D. required.

Applicants with Ph.D.'s in Gender and Women's Studies are especially invited to apply but scholars with appropriate training in humanistic and social scientific fields are also welcome.


Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have an academic record in gender, sexuality, or women's studies commensurate with an appointment at the rank of Full Professor with tenure; experience in academic administration, with three years preferred; a record of success in strategic planning and fundraising experience with budgets and a demonstrable commitment to the mission, vision, and values of a public R1 university; a willingness to play an active role in the life of the department, college, university, and community; a commitment to excellence in teaching, learning, and mentoring; strong leadership and communication skills; and the ability to collaboratively develop and articulate a bold vision for the future of Gender and Women's Studies.

The successful candidate will demonstrate experience with fostering or the ability to foster a teaching, learning, mentoring, departmental, and research environment where all can thrive.

The Department of Gender and Women's Studies at University of Wisconsin-Madison is an interdisciplinary home for research and teaching on feminism, women, gender, and sexuality. Growing from the Women's Studies Program, which was founded in 1975, we became a department in 2008. Having begun with a small set of course offerings, the department now lists over 100 courses at the undergraduate and graduate level and admitted our first cohort of PhD students to matriculate in Fall, 2023. Departmental strengths include disability, queer and trans* studies, visual culture, political theory, art & performance studies, gender and health and reproductive health, rights, and justice. All faculty share a commitment to research and teaching feminist theory, queer theory, and the complex intersections of gender, race, disability, class, and sexuality. Through our scholarship, teaching, and outreach, we engage our communities, our state, and the world with a commitment to social justice.
