Job Description

The College of Veterinary Medicine at MU is on a mission to inclusively educate and train outstanding clinicians and scientists from diverse backgrounds, generate new knowledge, engage stakeholders, and foster economic growth, all of which promote and protect the health and welfare of animals and people. Veterinarians throughout the Midwest refer animal clients to the Veterinary Health Center for specialized diagnoses and treatment. With sophisticated therapeutic equipment that includes an underwater treadmill, advanced imaging techniques, and groundbreaking equine lameness diagnostic equipment, we are a center for animal healthcare.

The Veterinary Health Center is currently hiring experienced Senior Registered Veterinary Technicians for multiple small animal service lines. Our technicians have the opportunity to work collaboratively with some of the top clinicians, registered veterinary technicians, and veterinary assistants in Missouri, the United States, and the world. Our technicians impact the quality of life for our patients as well as their owners and families. We are seeking energetic, caring, empathetic, and driven individuals who seek an environment that fosters continuous learning and professional development as well as top notch service delivery. Our senior veterinary technicians are expected to leverage their prior experience for patient care as well as staff and student training and mentorship. We currently have openings in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care (ICU and Emergency Service), Neurology, Orthopedic Surgery, Ophthalmology and Radiation Oncology.

Primary responsibilities for Veterinary Technicians may include:

  • Conduct initial exam of animal including taking vital signs, drawing blood, collecting specimens, and gathering medical histories.
  • Calm and soothe patients; safely restrain, transport, and handle patients; and prepare patients for treatments and procedures.
  • Provide emergency first aid; monitor critical patients; participate in and assist with procedures and treatments; administer medication as prescribed by a veterinarian.
  • Prepare equipment for surgical procedures; clean and organize treatment and examination rooms.
  • Educate clients and owners on treatment plans, behavior changes, feeding, exercise and overall wellness for their animals; update patient medical records.
  • Participate in teaching veterinary students and assist with research activities.
  • Other duties as assigned. Duties will vary across service lines.
Shift

Shifts can vary depending on the service line. Most service lines operate Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm.

Shifts in Small Animal Critical Care (ER and ICU) include nights, overnights, and weekends. Shift preferences will be discussed during interview process.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technology Program.
  • Licensure as a Registered Veterinary Technician in the State of Missouri, or eligibility to obtain Missouri Licensure within 6 months after start date.
  • Must have 5 years of experience in a general veterinary practice or 3 years in a progressive specialty or Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

  • Detailed-oriented and well organized to take medical histories, carry out instructions, document patient statistics and update records.
  • Enjoy working with animals and have the ability to comfort, handle and restrain large and small pets.
Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: hiring range begins at $22.50 per hour.
Grade: GGS-007

We offer a hiring incentive of up to $1,000.00 for qualified individuals. Shift differential is available on some evening and overnight shifts.
