Position Summary

The Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction & Environmental Engineering (CCEE) is seeking a Sr. Academic Advisor. This is a key position in the department and will work closely with the SoE Advisement Manager. This position performs integrated academic advisement and works with prospective, current, and former students. Assesses academic level and will advise on academic programs and changes. Develops academic plans and is consulted about the curriculum and class schedule. Analyzes applications, transfer evaluations, and transcripts for entry and exit from the University. Maintains appropriate records. Coordinates or performs special functions associated with an academic function, such as assisting with curriculum planning, committee service, and guiding the work of assistants or work study students. Responsible for assisting with graduate program admissions. Assist graduate students with the appropriate paperwork regarding, program of studies, thesis, dissertation proposals, defenses, and comprehensive/preliminary exams. The Advisor will work closely with the department staff, Department Chair, Faculty, Undergraduate Chair, and Faculty Graduate Advisor.

Additionally, the Advisor will be responsible for tracking students' progress towards degree completion within the curriculum, keeping student academic records current within Lobo Achieve and related UNM degree tracking/audit systems. This position will assist in School of Engineering events, which may require work on at least one Saturday during the year and will help coordinate New Student Orientation and retention programs for new and continuing students. Our Advisors also get the opportunity to attend professional workshops and conferences.

The successful candidate will need to be highly organized, detail oriented and have the ability to produce high-quality results while successfully maintaining progress across multiple projects and deadlines. This person should possess the ability to work efficiently with minimal supervision and have the flexibility to adapt to changing priorities. Further, possess the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. We are looking for someone that will fit in well with the department, demonstrate excellence in customer service, and be willing to work with a variety of students, faculty, staff, members of the School of Engineering, and the greater campus community.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 2 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • Knowledge of UNM General Education Curriculum and the New Mexico Articulation policies.
  • Knowledge of UNM Graduate Studies policies and procedures.
  • Microsoft office products and ability to work with Microsoft Office calendar.
  • Effective written and communication skills.
  • Organizing and coordinating student and/or special events.
  • Academic advisement and program coordination.
  • Must be able to work some evenings and weekends. May be asked to represent departments at off campus events (example would be at the Branch Campus transfer days).
  • Foster & promote continuous excellent customer service.
  • Ability to work with a varied student population and faculty, staff, and campus community.
  • Demonstrated skills in multitasking, preparing reports, problem-solving, and analyzing program, university, and/or curriculum/graduation requirements.
