Open Rank UNMCCC IM Epidemiology in Cancer Computational Biology, Bioinformatics & Biostatistics

The University of New Mexico NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) and the Department of Medicine, Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Preventive Medicine at the UNM School of Medicine invite applications for faculty position in cancer-focused Computational Biology, Integrative Modeling, and Cancer Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, and Genetic Molecular Epidemiology (Multi-specialty). This is an Open Rank, Open Track position. We seek two highly interactive faculty who are developing strong track records of academic accomplishment including peer-reviewed funding and impactful publications in high quality journals, as well as more established senior faculty with sustained records of outstanding scholarly achievements. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to take advantage of large complex data sets, including but not limited to human genome sequencing and epigenetic data sets from multiple platforms and model systems; network reconstruction from transcriptomics and proteomics; high-resolution cellular, animal and human imaging data sets at multiple scales; and population science data (surveillance, cancer disparity patterns, epidemiology, behavioral, exposure) from large retrospective and prospective population cohorts. Biostatisticians who are engaged in statistical methodology relevant to cancer and in biostatistical applications integrated with basic, translational, clinical, and population science research. We seek candidates with strong potential to contribute to clinical research and cancer clinical trials design, but also population and basic science studies, and, who will collaborate with cancer-focused physicians and scientists through the UNMCCC Biostatistical Shared Resource. Potential areas of research interest include, but are not limited to, the study and application of modern clinical trials approaches, particularly adaptive and Bayesian methods, statistical methods for cancer genomics, statistical modeling of large data sets, as well as statistical and quantitative approaches focusing on algorithm development, prediction modeling, survival analysis, competing risks models, and causal inference. Successful candidates will have an academic faculty appointment in the Department of Internal Medicine at UNM SOM, membership in the UNMCCC, and will join the UNMCCC Biostatistics Shared Resource, which is highly engaged in the Center's Multidisciplinary Clinical Working Groups focused on the development and prioritization of cancer clinical trials and correlative studies and in the cancer clinical trials infrastructure and regulatory committees (Clinical Protocol & Data Management, Data Safety & Monitoring, Protocol Review and Monitoring System, and Early Phase Clinical Research). Finally, the UNMCCC is seeking cancer population scientists with expertise in population-based molecular and/or genetic epidemiology to expand programmatic efforts in cancer control and population science in New Mexico. The successful candidate will hold a tenured faculty position in the Department of Internal Medicine, UNMCCC membership, and will be provided significant resources, including Endowed Chairs or Fellowships, excellent salaries, comprehensive start-up packages, and support to recruit additional faculty. Faculty rank and appointment will be commensurate with accomplishments.

The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center (UNMCCC) The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its more than 120 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexico's cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated approximately 14,000 patients in about 100,000 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of nearly 400 patients participated in cancer clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than 100 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $35.7 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015, they have published nearly 1000 manuscripts, and promoting economic development, they filed 136 new patents and launched 10 new biotechnology start-up companies. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 500 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. Minimum Qualifications:

• PhD, MD or MD/PhD
• Proven ability to collaborate with and/or lead teams with broad expertise in informatics, big data analysis and/or mathematical modeling related to clinical or translational cancer research;
• Must be eligible to work in the U.S.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Commitment
  to participation in team science initiatives and multi-investigator,
  programmatic grant.
• Expertise in modern clinical trials methodologies and applications;
• Ability to develop collaborations with investigators from multiple disciplines in areas of oncology research emphasis;
• High
  impact methodological orientation;
• Strong
  potential for a funded independent research program; and
• Ability
  to provide leadership and direction to staff scientists in the UNMCCC
  Biostatistics/Bioinformatics Shared Resource.
