Position Summary

UNM Neurology is known for its cutting-edge
research. Our research programs contribute to groundbreaking discoveries in
neurology. We have major research funding for stroke, multiple sclerosis,
vascular cognitive impairment, epilepsy, and Alzheimer's disease. These
research programs involve both the clinical and basic sciences.

Neurology seeks two HS Research Tech 2 positions to conduct
research in Dr. Yi Yang's lab. The positions are supported by an NIH RF1 Grant:
Sphingosine 1 phosphate signaling in cerebral small vessel disease. This
research focuses on cellular and molecular mechanisms of brain injury and
neurovascular remodeling associated with the vascular dementia and ischemic
stroke. The research program presents the opportunity to utilize a variety of
approaches including cell culture, molecular biology, protein chemistry,
immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, small animal surgery (rat and mouse models
of middle cerebral artery occlusion, implantation of micro-pump etc.), magnetic
resonance imaging (MRI) of rodent brains, as well as behavioral studies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of these positions is to carry
out research under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator/collaborators
in the field. The positions will be expected to assist the Principal Investigator
in planning and implementation of different experimental procedures.
Flexibility to work on different projects is a prerequisite and the positions will
be expected to learn, plan and conduct experiments, analyze and report data,
monitor inventories of all laboratory supplies, maintaining laboratory
equipment in good working condition, and order reagents as necessary. The
positions will also be involved in working with other lab personnel.

Conditions of Employment
  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area.


Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

  • BS degree in a biology related field
  • Neurosciences background
  • Animal handling experience (rats/mice)
  • Experience with animal behavioral testing
  • Experience in cryosectioning, immunohistochemistry, immunoblotting, tissue culture methods
  • Excellent organizational skills and willingness to learn new methodologies
