Position Summary
The El Ghali Lab at the University of New Mexico's College of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy Practice and Administrative Sciences is currently recruiting for a Health Sciences Research Tech 2.
Our lab is dedicated to investigating the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) of antimicrobial agents like bacteriophage and antibiotics, with a special emphasis on combating multi-drug resistant (MDR) Gram-negative infections, particularly Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The research also explores the use of in vitro time-kill analysis, biofilm PK/PD models, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing studies to optimize antimicrobial therapies and investigate their efficacy.
This position will perform experiments in the lab, help train students, and perform lab coordinator responsibilities including ordering and lab organization and maintenance. This position requires attention to detail and ability to develop and follow written scientific protocols accurately and reproducibly. The candidate will be required to maintain laboratory records including lab notebooks, equipment logs, and internal purchasing request records and will organize data for presentations, reports, and publications. The successful candidate will have a basic knowledge of biology, microbiology, phage biology and scientific research methodology, the ability to collect and process research data, and to accurately record and report findings.

Conditions of Employment
  • For individual positions in which driving is a job requirement, a valid NM driver's license and valid UNM driver's permit will be required.
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
  • Annual TB testing may be required if working in a patient care area.


Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications:
  • BS in Biology, or a related field.
  • Experience performing microbiological techniques such as bacterial plating, minimum inhibitory concentration testing, aseptic technique, bacterial storage.
  • Experience working with bacteriophage, including storage, propagation, phage quantification, susceptibility testing, one-step growth curves, and DNA extraction.
  • Experience performing molecular biology techniques, including, tissue culture, quantitative qPCR, and flow cytometry.
  • Experience participating in meetings with the Principal Investigator (PI).
  • Experience working both independently and as a team member.
  • Background and interest in microbiology and infectious diseases.
