Position Summary

CASA Tutoring: The Center for Academic Success and Achievement (CASA) is dedicated to providing tutoring to help you succeed in your academic endeavors at UNM-Taos. Services are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis and are free of charge. Tutoring is provided by trained peer tutors in both small group and individual sessions. Tutors participate in training activities to hone specific skills to better assist students engage and understand the curriculum. Individual learning differences are acknowledged and valued at the CASA.

Peer Academic Success Tutors will assist students in improving academic achievement by:

* Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment

* Facilitating student learning by helping students understand their learning process and modeling metacognitive strategies

* Collaborating with the students to determine their academic needs

* Providing appropriate individual and small group tutoring to students who need support with academic skills such as, but not limited to, study strategies, note-taking strategies, time management strategies, accountability, and community

* Supporting the development of an organized study plan for students assigned to them

* Providing guidance with Canvas, MS Word, computer navigation, and other basic technology needs

* Serving as a model within the First Year Experience course as available

* Meeting with students one-on-one (in person and virtually) on a regular basis

* Serving as a model (academics, promptness, dedication) for students being tutored

* Documenting tutorial objectives, activities, material needed, and assessment of the tutorial assistance

* Participating in all scheduled staff meetings, training program, and in-service education as designated by the staff

* Planning and conducting discipline-specific workshops if needed

* Other duties as assigned.

Tutoring sessions should include, but not limited to the following: review of class material, discussion of the text, predict test questions and create study aids, and develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. Tutors are not expected to know everything about the subject for which they tutor.

Availability for tutor training is required for employment.

Employment as a tutor does not guarantee a minimum number of work hours. Work hours will be based on program needs

* Be degree seeking

* Be UNM-Taos students enrolled in 6 credit hours or more during the academic semesters

* Have earned a minimum of 3.0 GPA in the tutoring area applied for in this application

* Attach one letter of recommendation from a professor when applying or a cover letter detailing your fit for the position
