Description

Provides direct patient care through use of the nursing process. Working with the Nurse Director, facilitates the daily operations of the unit.

II. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE:

Responsibility #1:

Accurately assesses patients' needs

Standards:

1.1 Utilizes multiple data sources to determine actual/potential health problems and functional status

1.2 Provides verbal communication to other health care providers

1.3 Documentation reflects on-going assessment of patients' biopsychosocial status on Assessment Flowsheet

Responsibility #2:

Accurately plans nursing interventions for assigned patients.

Standards:

2.1 Modifies and individualizes Standard of Care and protocols

2.2 Participates in the development of the multidisciplinary treatment plan

2.3 Initiates discharge plans at time of admission

2.4 Demonstrates ability to prioritize patient care needs

Responsibility #3:

Provides and implements nursing care interventions.

Standards:

3.1 Establishes a therapeutic alliance with assigned patients

3.2 Demonstrates accurate and timely medication administration

3.3 Demonstrates accurate and timely transcription of physician orders

3.4 Promotes interventions that provide the least-restrictive alternatives

3.5 Participates in leading patient groups

Responsibility #4:

Accurately evaluates the effectiveness of nursing care interventions.

Standards:

4.1 Documentation on the Standard of Care, protocols, and Assessment Flowsheet reflects response to intervention, demonstrates an understanding of patients' response to treatment interventions

4.2 Accurately communicates patients' clinical status at patient rounds and change of shift reports

4.3 Participates in unit/program Quality Improvement activities

Responsibility #5:

Assumes a leadership role in managing the daily operations of the unit.

Standards

5.1 Provides direction and supervision of RNs and MHSs

5.2 Assumes a leadership role in medical and psychiatric emergencies

5.3 Anticipates acute milieu problems and delegates staff appropriately

5.4 Participates in the training and education of RNs, MHSs, and other healthcare providers

5.5 Problem-solves with the Nurse Director around staffing issues

Responsibility #6:

Provides for teaching needs of patient and significant others

Standards

6.1 Documents teaching in the patient's record

6.2 Informs treatment team of patient and significant others' learning needs

Responsibility #7:

Maintains a commitment to professional growth and competency.

Standards

7.1 Utilizes the best available evidence to guide practice decisions

7.2 Completes mandatory inservice requirements

7.3 Participates in ongoing educational activities

7.4 Seeks constructive feedback regarding work performance from peers and professional colleagues

7.5 Identifies strengths and areas for professional/practice development with supervisor

7.6 Supports, participates (as applicable) in research projects

Responsibility #8:

Participates in the education and professional development of staff.

Standards

8.1 Collaborates with the Nursing Director in identifying and providing teaching for staff members

8.2 Participates in the development of clinical policies, nursing department procedures, and standards of care

Responsibility #9:

Demonstrates effective interpersonal communication.

Standards

9.1 Maintains patient privacy and confidentiality

9.2 Communicates positively, supportively, and with courtesy to the patients and staff

9.3 Presents self in a positive and professional manner

Responsibility #10:

Contributes to the productivity and cost-effectiveness of the hospital, department, and unit.

Standards

10.1 Demonstrates effective time management

10.2 Demonstrates economical management of services and supplies


Qualifications

Education: Graduation from accredited registered nursing program required. Bachelor's Degree; B.S.N. preferred

Licensure: Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts

Skills: Skilled clinician, demonstrated problem-solving skills, leadership ability

Experience: Five years experience working in the mental health field, preferred
