The Laboratory for Drug Discovery in Neurodegeneration (LDDN) invites applications for a synthetic organic chemist to join our medicinal chemistry team. The LDDN (https://www.bwhneurosciences.org/lddn/) is part of the Department of Neurology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Harvard Medical School. The LDDN works in close collaboration with principal investigators from the research community of Harvard Medical School and its affiliated hospitals as well as Universities across the country. Through medicinal chemistry and drug discovery expertise we help to transform discoveries in the basic biology of disease into opportunities for drug discovery. We are seeking a talented Technical Research Assistant I to work as a medicinal chemist in our lab in Cambridge, MA. Working under the general supervision of the Lab Director, and in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, the ideal candidate will have practical experience of organic synthesis and will conduct a variety of organic chemistry synthesis experiments to prepare compounds for biological testing. Qualifications
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Successfully perform organic reactions to synthesize novel drug-like compounds on small (5-10 mg) and larger (1-10g) scales including isolation of products with the appropriate use of recrystallization, column chromatography, and prep-HPLC 2. Maintain notebook and characterization data, including NMR and LC-MS spectra of new compounds 3. Develop an understanding of the structure activity relationships (SAR) for analogs on the project. Application of this knowledge to the design and synthesis of new analogs for projects 4. Perform literature searches 5. Use computational software when applicable to model molecules and understand SAR 6. The ability to work well in diverse teams is very important as the candidate will interact significantly with research students at all levels of ability in the lab 7. Strong written, verbal communications and computer skills are essential. 8. Discusses progress of work regularly with supervisor. 9. All other duties, as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must possess a BS or MS in Chemistry with relevant synthetic organic chemistry experience. SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: * Good organizational skills, detail oriented * Sound degree of computer literacy * Ability to methodically record data and to analyze data * Ability to perform a variety of organic laboratory work * Good interpersonal and communication skills * Ability to demonstrate professionalism WORKING CONDITIONS: Successful candidate will work in a laboratory setting with chemicals, some of which will have possible hazardous properties.
