Description

Under the general direction of the Clinic Nurse Manager, the Medical Assistant will perform a range of duties in line with the standard work of a medical assistant and includes coordinating patient flow, taking of vital signs, phlebotomy and performing point of care and testing. Provide secretarial support to the practice by answering the phone, scheduling appointments and other office work as needed.

The incumbent must be able to organize priorities, complete tasks, manage confidential patient information; schedule appointments, review and document diagnostic testing, make referrals and interact with patients in a professional, friendly manner consistent with their needs.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:




  • Greet and escorts patients into exam rooms
  • Obtains and records vital signs, weights, blood pressure, pulses, temperature, pain scale rating and other documentation deemed necessary prior to seeing the Provider
  • Reviews and documents the patients current medications list, update immunizations and all pertinent documents for the visit type
  • Process and run CLIA approved testing and lab quality control
  • Report results of labs performed on site to the Providers
  • Prepare and package specimens to clinical laboratory for processing in some case may need to transport collected specimens to clinical laboratories
  • Alerts the provider when the patient is ready and communicates pertinent clinical information
  • Provides care appropriate to age group of patients in practice setting and documents data per practice protocols
  • Instructs patients how to prepare for the physicians or nurses (assisting as necessary)
  • Collects specimens during visit as ordered and provide patients with instructions for specimen collection at home: Weekly rotating in Clinic Lab

- Stool for Occult Blood

- 24 urine collection

- Tests specimens as necessary



  • Performs other tests, procedures, and treatments as directed:


- Simple dry, sterile dressing

- 12 lead EKG

- Bladder Scan



  • Set up, clean and stock exam rooms
  • Adheres to hand hygiene and standard precautions guidelines
  • Assists with printing letters, scanning medical information, filing, faxing and communicating with outside facilities and patients
  • Receives patient messages, reviews these with nurses per practice protocols and takes action as directed
  • Complete medication and radiology prior authorizations as necessary
  • Calls patients prior to virtual visit/telemedicine visits to record home vital signs and review medications and allergies
  • Work with patient care coordinator and covers the front desk as needed
  • Looks ahead at the schedule and providers on site
  • Amends the daily patient schedule as needed, re-scheduling, calling patients
  • Transport patient when needed
  • Ordering clinic supplies, any and all supplies used - prints off a copy of requisition and communicates EDA and when they arrive
  • Weekly inventory of stock, maintains par levels and change them as needed
  • All of the above but also any clinic needs as they arise



SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Clinical skills standard for a medical assistant, to include accurate taking of vital signs, ability to perform POC testing and draw blood

Knowledge of office based tests and procedures

Ability to learn specialized testing as appropriate to practice and execute properly

Knowledge of standard medical office procedures, including appointment scheduling, telephone skills, routine billing and insurance matters

Good communication skills

Sound judgment and problem-solving ability

Ability to prioritize

Ability to handle multiple tasks in a busy environment and see them through to completion

Accuracy and attention to detail

Knowledge of computer skills necessary

Good command of the English language

Ability to work independently and within a team environment

Demonstrated knowledge of HIPPA Confidentiality and Privacy Policies

Ability to perform Phlebotomy

Good understanding of medical terminology


WORKING CONDITIONS:

Employee may be exposed to disease bearing specimens, hazardous chemicals or fumes, other hazards normally associated with a clinical laboratory setting including patient instability and /or unpredictability.

Work environment may be noisy or crowded.

May be required to travel between buildings and outside. Due to travel outdoors, may have limited exposure to car fumes, noise, dust, chemicals and inclement weather.

Exposure to needle sticks and punctures from other sharps.

Exposure to patients with infectious diseases, he or she must take appropriate precautions according to Infection Control.

Qualifications

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS

Medical Assistant and Basic Life Support certification required

Other academic preparation may be considered in lieu of certification


EDUCATION:

High school diploma plus certificate from a medical assistant training program required. Associates degree preferred


EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of up to 2 years direct experience in a medical office or health care setting required.
