Join a supportive Advanced Practice Team at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center in Waltham, MA. This community-based practice specializes in the care of patients with a variety of hematologic oncologic diagnoses. This role will focus primarily on the care of solid tumor patient populations with an emphasis on breast cancer and genitourinary tract cancers but cross coverage across all specialties is expected.

The oncology APP will deliver direct care to ambulatory patients at our Waltham site. With an interdisciplinary team approach, this provider will promote a collaborative relationship between providers, professional nurses, and administrative staff, to ensure continuity of patient care in the management of their disease and related issues as well as to develop expertise in these fields. Within this role, the advanced practice provider will be responsible for a panel of patients. Other responsibilities include caring for patients throughout their continuum of care and encouraging collaboration with other providers within the hospital and clinics to facilitate patient care.

This provider develops, implements, and evaluates a plan of specialized health care for the hematology and oncology patient population throughout the care continuum. Promotes a professional and collaborative relationship and effort between the advanced practice team, medical staff, professional nursing staff, and administrative staff. Strives to provide and to ensure continuity of care for patients, while being efficient in use of resources. This provider serves as a role model for professional advance practice and participates in the professional development of the team through teaching, committee involvement or quality and safety initiatives to name a few. In addition to clinical skills, this person should possess strong leadership and communication skills and be able to work effectively with other members of the team.



  • Performs and records the patient history and physical exam and discusses findings with the physician.
  • Applies advanced practice knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring patient care problems.
  • Works closely with nursing staff to provide sophisticated care coordination and symptom management through indirect patient care and to build capacity for urgent visits.
  • Follows and manages patients (in collaboration with MD) improving continuity of care.
  • Performs (coordinates/assures completion of) specialized procedures to the select population mutually agreed upon with collaborating physician.
  • Performs medically delegated aspects of patient care as agreed upon by nursing and medical administrators per practice guidelines.
  • Collaborates with unit staff and physicians to facilitate a comprehensive plan of care and coordinate resources and to write appropriate orders improving access to care, establishing goals for the delivery of care to patients, participating in clinical research and managing communication between physicians, patients, family and staff.
  • Writes orders which are in accord with current guidelines.
  • Maintains and practices in accord with practitioner guidelines per state and hospital regulations Provides consultation to both nurses and physicians.
  • Serves as a resource to staff in area(s) of expertise.
  • Serves on appropriate intra and interdepartmental committees.
  • Collaborates with unit staff, Clinical Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Staff Specialists and other health care professionals to meet staff and patient educational needs.
  • Monitors patient outcomes in accordance with defined standards of patient care.
  • Collaborates with nurse managers, clinical nurses and medical staff to plan, implement and evaluate pertinent change in practice and health care delivery.
  • Identifies system-wide factors contributing to undesirable outcomes, such as complications, increased length of stay and over utilization of services.
  • Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Supports research efforts to advance knowledge and to promote research-based practice.
  • Evaluates own practice and program efficiency.
  • Assists nursing and medical colleagues in research efforts.
  • Responsible for own professional growth and maintenance of required credentials.
  • Maintains the standards and educational requirements specific to the position and licensure.
  • Identifies own learning needs and goals.
  • Takes ownership for leadership and participation on committees and task forces Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current health care practice/research.

Qualifications

Master's Degree in Nursing or completion of NCCPA program

Current licensure in the commonwealth of Massachusetts as a registered NP/PA

2 Years Advanced Practice experience in hematology/oncology

Proficiency with Epic and telemedicine preferred.

Familiarity with clinical trials preferred.

Ability to effectively communicate clinical information, care plans, etc. to medical and lay audiences; able to educate patients and their families regarding routine and complex medical information.

Skilled in creating appropriate documentation and use of electronic medical records.

Strong organizational and time management skills.

Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team; can effectively influence and lead as necessary.

Effectively uses analytical skills and problem-solving techniques in both clinical and operational matters.
